Do not worry; you will look back and relish this moment.

For young lawyers who may have the opportunity to appear before the Court of Appeal or and the Supreme Court. Ensure you do the following:

1. Study your file.
2. Know when your processes were filed (and dated).
3. Know when the Record was transmitted.

Whenever you hear, "Counsel, are there Housekeeping Applications?", know that the Court is simply asking you if there are Applications (Motions) you filed to regularise your Processes before the Court.

Also note that the Justices do not expect you to know everything. They want to show you know your file and that you can reasonably present your case.

Do not be afraid. You will always learn from the Court and colleagues. I wish you well.

The SC in Obasanjo v. Olugbode (2026) 15 NWLR (Pt. 2062) 273 held that in an application for leave to appeal as an interested party, no enlargement of time is required to seek leave. Consequently, a prayer seeking enlargement of time to seek leave to appeal as an interested party is incompetent and will affect the other reliefs which depend on it.

For example, the motion should seek:

(a) leave to appeal as an interested party;
(b) extension of time to seek leave to appeal;
(c) leave to appeal; and
(d) extension of time to file the Notice and Grounds of Appeal,

and NOT:

(a) enlargement of time to seek leave to appeal as an interested party;
(b) leave to appeal as an interested party;
(c) leave to appeal; and
(d) extension of time to file the Notice and Grounds of Appeal.

The distinction is that there is no prescribed period to be enlarged for seeking leave to appeal as an interested party. As such, the addition of a prayer for enlargement of time to seek leave to appeal as an interested party will affect the other prayers and consequently make the motion incompetent and liable to be refused.
