Shout out to the Seawilding Garden, designed by Ryan McMahon, which just won a Gold Award at the Chelsea Flower Show! ๐
Inspired by the rocky coastal landscape surrounding Loch Craignish on Scotlandโs west coast, this garden celebrates the work of charity Seawilding to restore seagrass meadows โ vital inshore habitats disappearing at an alarming rate. Itโs also the first time seagrass, the UKโs only ocean-flowering plant, has featured at the show!
Why seagrass?
๐ It supports biodiversity by providing nursery grounds for marine life
๐ It captures carbon faster than the rainforest
๐ 95% of UK seagrass meadows have been lost โ restoring them is crucial for marine wildlife and the climate.
Our pathway to a #RewildingNation calls for ambitious projects to restore marine ecosystems โ including seagrass and kelp meadows, saltmarshes and oyster beds. The Seawilding Garden shines a welcome light on marine ecosystems and the communities working to bring them back to life.
Huge congratulations to everyone involved! ๐

Can you spy the squid we spotted in Hartlepool Dock recently in this video? Weโre used to finding all sorts of life in the dock, but weโve never seen a squid, let alone one this big ๐ฆ itโs always great to see so much diversity in the dock, which our oysters are contributing to!
It's your last chance to take part in the #BigRiverWatch today! ๐จ While the weather is so lovely why not?
It was great completing a survey this morning, and it is so quick and easy!
It's a great opportunity to take part in citizen science, so tell us what you've seen below ๐ฆ
Today is the day - #NoMowMay is here! Ready to start your #NoMowMovement and help nature? ๐ธ๐ฅณ
& remember, this is just the start...leaving wildflowers to grow in the summer helps biodiversity & local wildlife. ๐ฆ

We're working with Hull University to fit some with sonar trackers and follow their incredible journey ๐โจ
These eels are amazingโborn thousands of miles away, somehow finding their way to our local waters, and then heading back across the ocean to the Sargasso Sea to spawn.
Eel-ectrifying news from a lake near the Skerne! ๐๐งโ๐ฌ
Today we had slippery success in our hunt for European eels! ๐
It was great chatting to people about these mysterious creatures and why they matter. Eel numbers have dropped greatly recently, but weโre working to change this.
Donโt forget the Big River Watch is taking place in just over a week! Get planning what stretch of river youโre going to visit now ๐ฆ

Letโs play Spring Bingo! โจ๐ผ
The first day of spring is here, and the catchment is starting to bloom! ๐ธ๐ฟ Weโve spotted crocuses, daffodils, cherry blossoms, wild garlic, and some rams enjoying the fresh pastures. The River Tees is looking glorious too! ๐ What have you seen?
With the arrival of spring, Himalayan balsam is starting to appear again๐ฑ We donโt have active work planned for this year but weโre planning for the future, including mapping key areas for future management, planning balsam bashing, and expanding biocontrol sites from 13 to 38!
The Tees has always shaped the landscape of Barnard Castle. Overlooked by the 12th-century fortress, the river flows under County Bridge, which has spanned the Tees since 1569.
Whether you're exploring history or enjoying the views, the River Tees is at the heart of this town๐ฐ๐
Would you like to learn river restoration techniques in beautiful surroundings - all for free? Join us for a fish habitat walk and workshop along the River Tees! ๐ 22nd March, 9.45am - 3pm, near Gainford in County Durham. Email [email protected] or call 07500 870583.
our delightful common #frog and #smoothnewt feature on the latest Royal Mail stamp set!

It has definitely felt like spring is in the air recently, and flowers have been starting to appear! ๐ธโ ๏ธ
Some of our most popular flowers are early spring flowers, like crocuses, snowdrops, daffodils and primroses all of which can be seen all over the North-East at the moment ๐ผ
Happy #WorldSeagrassDay ๐ฑ
Seagrass meadows are some of our best allies in addressing climate change.
These #bluecarbon ecosystems capture and store carbon while protecting our coasts from increased storms and floods. (1/2)
We also removed an elder tree to prevent it choking the hedge and to give other plants the chance to flourish ๐ฑ
Thank you to everyone for their hard work - this kind of collaboration between volunteers, communities, farmers, and landowners helps protect our local landscapes ๐ช๐
Our volunteers have been helping restore and protect hedgerows โ a vital habitat for birds, insects, and small mammals ๐ฆ๐๐ฆ Working with a local farmer, the team got stuck into hedge laying โ an ancient craft that helps create dense, healthy hedgerows that will thrive for years
