Despite the criticism directed at First Lady Oluremi Tinubu's small business development initiatives, she remains dedicated to empowering Nigerians through diverse programs.
Her Renewed Hope Agenda in Oyo State equipped 500 Nano Business women with essential tools, including generators, chest freezers, grinding machines, and ovens, to augment their business operations. Empowering individuals generates more lasting benefits than criticism.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have rescued 10 National Examinations Council candidates and teachers abducted by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists during an attack on a secondary school in Lassa Community, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The military disclosed on Monday that the victims were rescued during a coordinated air and ground operation launched shortly after the terrorists stormed the Technical Secondary School while students were writing their NECO examinations.
According to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, the attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
He said, “Immediately upon receipt of the incident, Theatre Command scrambled both strike and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI to support troops mobilised to the area for a coordinated search and rescue operation.”
Goni explained that troops, guided by the overhead air platforms, made contact with the fleeing terrorists around Daggu, leading to a fierce gun battle.
“The operation has so far resulted in the successful rescue of 10 victims, who were unhurt and are currently receiving the necessary care and support, while efforts remain ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
He added that the troops outmanoeuvred the terrorists during the encounter, inflicted casualties on them and captured seven motorcycles used by the insurgents in their attempted escape.
“During the contact, troops outmanoeuvred the fleeing terrorists, inflicting casualties on them and capturing seven of their motorcycles, significantly disrupting their escape,” the statement said.
He, however, confirmed that one soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force were killed during the exchange of fire.
“Regrettably, during the intense firefight, one gallant soldier of Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force made the supreme sacrifice during the intense exchange of fire with the terrorists,” Goni stated.
He described their sacrifice as a reflection of “the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens and restore peace across the North East.”
Goni said troops had intensified operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to rescue the remaining abducted victim and track down those responsible for the attack.
He added that security had also been strengthened around the affected community to protect vulnerable settlements and educational institutions.
“The incident further underscores the desperation of terrorist groups who, faced with sustained pressure from ongoing military operations, have resorted to attacking soft targets and vulnerable members of society in a futile attempt to sustain their campaign of terror,” the statement read.
He stressed, however, that “such cowardly acts will neither deter Operation HADIN KAI’s resolve nor diminish its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace and security across the North East.”
Goni reaffirmed that Operation HADIN KAI remained committed to protecting civilians, safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring a secure environment for education and other essential services.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant, provide credible information to security agencies and disregard unverified reports regarding the incident, noting that updates would be issued through official channels as operations continue.

Akara, Kulikuli Empowerment, and the One-Sided View of the Olodo Uprising: Dissecting First Lady Remi Tinubu’s Empowerments in three years
- By Dada Olusegun
Public discourse in Nigeria has increasingly taken a troubling turn, shifting from constructive criticism to a performative circus of selective amnesia. The latest manifestation of this trend is the media frenzy surrounding the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s recent focus on micro-traders; specifically those who survive on small-scale culinary trades like frying akara (bean cakes) and selling kulikuli (peanut cakes).
In some sections of the media and digital spaces, this intervention has been swiftly framed as an attempt to "weaponize poverty." However, a look through the history of Senator Tinubu's public life reveals that this narrative is born out of a profound ignorance of both her extensive track record and the fundamental mechanics of Nigeria’s informal economy.
To claim that the First Lady’s interventions are strictly targeted at petty traders is a deliberate distortion of the facts. Over the last three years, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) has functioned as a multifaceted national social platform, rolling out heavy-investment programs across various critical sectors. These interventions are well-documented, with specific dates and locations:
>Major Healthcare Interventions (April 2025, Abuja): Senator Oluremi Tinubu made a massive financial commitment by donating ₦1 billion to the National Cancer Fund to scale up cervical cancer screening, testing, and treatment. This was closely followed in August 2025 by another ₦1 billion donation for Tuberculosis diagnostic equipment at the Dutsen Makaranta Primary Health Center in Abuja.
>Empowerment of Military Widows and Fallen Heroes' Families (November 2023, Abuja): Under her social investment scope, the First Lady disbursed ₦250,000 each to 1,709 widows and orphans of the Nigerian Armed Forces—drawn from associations like DEPOWA, NAOWA, and NOWA—amounting to over ₦427 million to help them recapitalize or start businesses.
>Inclusivity for Persons Living with Disabilities (December 3, 2025, Nationwide): Commemorating the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities, the RHI launched a coordinated program across all 36 states and the FCT, providing ₦200,000 business recapitalization grants to 250 PLWDs per state.
>National Women's Economic Empowerment (February 2025, Niger State): In Bida, Niger State, she flagged off the RHI/Tony Elumelu Foundation partnership, targeting 18,500 women nationwide with ₦50,000 grants each, alongside heavy machinery distribution like deep-chest freezers, generators, and industrial grinding machines.
Whether sorting out life-saving medical bills, providing industrial equipment, or handing out substantial cash injections to families of fallen heroes, her footprint spans the apex of structural support.
Even if we accept the critics' premise that the First Lady has now tilted her focus towards micro-enterprises like akara and kulikuli sellers, the resultant outrage betrays an elitist disconnect.
The critics, however often dubbed the online "Olodo armchair economists”, have zero idea how Nigeria’s informal economy operates. According to various economic metrics, the informal sector contributes over 50% of Nigeria’s GDP and accounts for over 80% of employment. The akara fryer, the kulikuli processor, and the petty trader are not just marginal actors; they are the literal shock absorbers of our micro-economy.
When you give a micro-grant or operational tools to an akara seller, you are not validating poverty; you are reducing immediate operational capital friction, securing food chains at the grassroots, and expanding household income. Mocking these initiatives as "petty" shows a deep-seated contempt for the actual working class of Nigeria.
ISWAP COMMANDERS SURRENDER AS MILITARY PRESSURE MOUNTS IN NORTH EAST
Ongoing operations by troops of Operation HADIN KAI have forced several ISWAP commanders and fighters to surrender in the North East.
The military said the terrorists abandoned their hideouts following intensified air and ground offensives that disrupted their networks and operations.
The surrendered commanders are providing intelligence to security forces, while over 76 terrorists and their families have reportedly surrendered within the past week.
The military says the development reflects growing pressure on insurgent groups and will support efforts to dismantle remaining terrorist strongholds.
The Lagos State Government has partnered with the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme to launch "Adopt a School for Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS," an initiative aimed at providing nutritious breakfast snacks to primary school pupils and improving learning outcomes across schools.
This initiative is expected to be launched in Lagos next week, Tuesday, June 30, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the National Programme Manager of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Dr. Aderemi Adebowale, says the intervention was designed to ensure that no child is deprived of quality education because of hunger.

From Holiday Declarations to High-Tech Security: A Tale of Two Interior Ministers
Anytime I watch the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo , speak on television or read about his remarkable achievements within just three years in office, I shake my head in disbelief. I find myself wondering who to hold accountable for the eight wasted years under former President Muhammadu Buhari and his then Minister of Interior, RAUF AREGBESOLA .
To be honest, during Aregbesola’s tenure, the only function I associated with the Ministry of Interior was the declaration of public holidays. I had no idea the ministry had such broad responsibilities or could be transformed into a technology-driven institution as we now see under Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo .
I listened to the Minister yesterday as he revealed how, through newly installed surveillance technology, the ministry successfully identified and arrested seven Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders who attempted to re-enter Nigeria after the 2026 Hajj. That single revelation underscores what visionary leadership and innovation can achieve in public service.
This brings us to one of Nigeria’s core governance problems: we rarely make political appointments based on competence and area of specialization. Too often, appointments are driven by selfish interests, patronage, or zoning arrangements. Public office is seen as an opportunity to “eat government money” rather than a mandate to solve national problems.
It is not that Aregbesola lacked specialization. As an engineer, he might have excelled as Minister of Power, Works, or any portfolio aligned with his technical expertise. But political opportunism often overrides merit. Instead of declining a role outside his competence, he accepted it and presided over a ministry for eight years with little to show beyond holiday declarations.
We cannot continue like this. If Nigeria is to progress, the President and state Governors must prioritize competence over cronyism. Ministries and agencies should be led by professionals with proven track records in those specific sectors.
TINUBU will go by 2031, it is left to Northern elders, leaders to rise up and quench the fire of terror their children ignite in the region before it is too late.
