Being a clinician & community paediatrician is a lot but purpose keeps me going.
Recently translated a Measles-Rubella advocacy script into Urhobo (no English!) for PAN & IPA. It takes a community effort to get this done.

There’s so much Prof. Angela Anene Okolo taught us about Paediatrics.
One lesson that has stayed with me is that paediatricians must always look beyond the clinic and engage with their community.
What did she teach you?

The Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) was invited to the launch of the OYA Campaign a collaborative initiative between Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Girl Effect, Noble Delta Women for Peace and Development which held on July 2, 2025, at the Unity Hall, Government House, Delta State.
The campaign promotes adequate nutrition for adolescent girls and advocates for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination of eligible girls, all geared toward empowering the girl child and improving child health outcomes. This initiative is in line with the Paediatric Association of Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to child health and disease prevention.
PAN congratulates the Delta State Government and the partnering NGO, on this laudable project. PAN also encourages parents and caregivers to support the campaign and ensure every eligible girl child in the selected Local Government Areas receives the HPV vaccine and proper nutritional support.
The event was attended by top dignitaries, including Her Excellency, the Wife of the Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori (ably represented by the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Ezinne Catherine Onyeme), the Head of Service, Dr. Mrs Minnie Oseji.
PAN was represented at the event by Dr Audrey-Dennis Ogbonna and Dr Idaboh Oghenetega @IdabohTega

Let’s envision a world where folks with AA genotype are willing to marry an AS partner.
……
(I’ve heard some AA folks say they can’t marry AS because they don’t want “S” in their lineage
Let’s start the conversation… what do you think?
Ok or not ok ???
The Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) joins the global community in marking the World Sickle cell day 2025 with the theme “*Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy”*
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder affecting hemoglobin in red blood cells. Nigeria has the highest burden of Sickle cell disease globally, with about 150,000 new cases born with the disease annually. About 2-3 in every 10 Nigerians have the sickle cell trait (AS genotype), also called sickle cell carriers.
Lack of awareness and genetic counseling of sickle cell disease contributes to its high prevalence in Nigeria. People living with sickle cell disease face barriers such as inadequate knowledge about the disease, societal stigma, limited specialized care, and financial constraints, as care is largely out-of-pocket. Early diagnosis through newborn screening and comprehensive sickle cell care which Nigeria has keyed into can significantly improve outcomes.
This years theme emphasizes on the empowering our communities for self advocacy. Community leaders can help disseminate information on how sickle cell disease is inherited, common symptoms, preventive measures, management, and the need for neonatal and premarital screening. Sickle cell warrior groups formations should be encouraged to promote advocacy and policy dialogues. Federal, state and local governments should intensify efforts to include the provision of comprehensive care for affected children under the universal social insurance program.
Every Nigerian should ensure they know their genotype as this is an important step in empowering communities
