A Malaysian man has shared a personal account of being trafficked to Cambodia by a trusted friend and held captive by a scam syndicate in Phnom Penh. He says he was beaten daily, forced to take part in phone scams, and constantly monitored, with soldiers guarding the compound. Victims were reportedly aged 17 to 35, with claims of severe abuse, including sexual violence.

He was released only after his wife filed police reports and a RM6,000 ransom was paid. He estimates around 700 Malaysians remain trapped in similar conditions. Malaysian consumer group PPIM has called for the arrest of those involved and for stronger, specialised action against transnational scam syndicates.

His account cannot be independently verified. However, it reflects common patterns repeatedly reported by survivors of scam compounds across the region.
