Rockstar has decided to a court order forcing Discord to surrender personal data from around 100,000 users. Most of them never leaked anything. Innocent bystanders got swept up because a multi-billion dollar company decided their leak hunt mattered more than privacy.
Now think about Discord is going push for age verification.
If they start collecting IDs and face scans “to protect kids” that data doesn’t stay locked away. The next time Rockstar (or any other giant with lawyers) wants someone, they already have a ready-made list of real names, faces, IPs and device IDs sitting there waiting to be handed over.
You can get wrongly flagged and still end up in their system. There is no real process. Just corporate power backed by a judge.
That’s why Privacy shall have exists for a reason. It is the only barrier to stop greedy companies and out-of-control platforms from turning every chat into a surveillance tool the moment it benefits them.
Governments corruption that let actual rapists, murderers and kidnappers walk free suddenly act like social media is the biggest threat to children. That priority is completely backwards.
Age verification plus data seizures is not protection for children. It is a permanent record waiting to be abused any time!
Fuck rockstar.
We have to fight back against government corruption and abolish age verification!
ESA updated their statement, a third time after saying community servers are "the black market of video games", "illegal", and "piracy" to the California State Senate. They tripled down, updated their statement, and caused a bill to fail
We wonder: What will be the consequences?
The UK government spyware demand means that the government decides exactly what should be censored on every mobile device. They say they will start with nude pictures (if you don’t identify yourself as an adult). But it could at any time be expanded to anything the government disapproves of. Today, 30 people are arrested every day in the United Kingdom for writing something online that the government classifies as "grossly offensive". It is obvious that they will use this tool to restrict free speech.
Currently, there appears to be no requirement to report findings outside the device. However, with both legal and technological decision-making power taken away from individuals and transferred to the government, that is only a pen stroke away.
This means that the government could also use this system for total mass surveillance.
And they can do so in secret.
The government recently, in secret, tried to pressure Apple (which is now agreeing to client-side scanning) to build backdoors into its end-to-end encrypted cloud service. They can do this under the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, also known as the "Snoopers' Charter" – a law that makes it illegal for tech companies to disclose secret demands from the government.
This is an exciting one for me, in part because I was lucky enough to see if fired this week. But Saab has launched its new HEAT 758 round.
It's a new round for the Carl Gustaf M4 launcher designed to defeat Russian reactive armour.
It uses a non-initiating precursor to help degrade the reactive element, allowing the main charge to penetrate up to 700 mm of armour.
It has a range of 600 metres, and uses Saab Firebolt technology, which is a set of sensors in the round that help populate the fire control system. This includes propellent temperature and nature.
It's the company's response to some munitions struggling with Russian armour, and I think it's a good addition to an infantry platoon. And with all the natures available, should be widely resourced.
I hate to tell everyone this but NOTHING gets done at a desk that looks like that.
Nothing is made, it's performative, ai generated.
Real value is a desk screen with 200 sticky notes posted all over the edges, where there are folded papers opened and unopened strewn across it.
Progress is made in the harnessing of chaos, by carving the narrow path of success through the tumultuousness of life.
The true 10xer (they used to call them "Wild Ducks" before performative tech bros took over) is an abject mess and chaos, but under examination, there is a clear ordering somewhere, an ongoing process, a violent battle against entropy on a wooden table.
