@leatualoa On that note you should start a podcast because you have lots of things worth saying and worth listening to. Even if you disagree, I think it'd be cool.
@GeorgioOrmani@MaikiSherman Yes because kicking Maiki down publically is a great way to give advice. Noted. For the record, I'm not confident in your claim.
@CitizenBomber She dealt with it straight away. If her manager a year ago didn't see fit to take further action that says a lot. What was Maiki meant to do? Have someone report on her saying a slur in reaction to another slur even though every party involved considered the matter resolved?
@upthewahs69@MaikiSherman Well looking at that particular poll and the timing of it that hyperbole (so soon after the 2023 election) was justified. Based on the numbers of that poll they would be voted out which is shocking for the then new government.
@tauhenare@LloydBurr Can you hand on heart say that Maiki uses her platform or has tried to use her platform to spread hatred about gays like Israel Come on mate, you have a whole rainbow community who'll back you (and hold you accountable) if you come forward and talk about your role in this.
@tauhenare@LloydBurr@LloydBurr Family First NZ are "in your corner", as are many other homophobic people and organisations who in people of different ethnic backgrounds worse than people of sexual diversity. Do you really want them championing you, and comparing Maiki to Israel Folau?
It’s ironic that a board member of the Free Speech Union is calling for Maiki Sherman to be cancelled. I’ve said many times and warned this style of rhetoric feels like a return to the Whale Oil blogging era, and now Ani O'Brien is at the centre of it. People are tired of political discourse driven by character attacks and outrage when public debate should be focused on policy and ideas.
I will continue to challenge conduct I see as hostile or bad-faith in the public arena and speak plainly about it. The line has to be drawn, and those who continue this disgusting and immature rhetoric only make themselves look pathetic. They lose all credibility when speaking about protecting free speech.
In my view, the FSU and some of its board members operate more as political spin machines than defenders of open democratic debate. It is a big lie.
They make attempts to influence legislative change without broad public mandate/referendums during elections which raise serious questions about democratic accountability and transparency today. Effectively a form of corruption sneaking past all electoral checks being a third-party group to political parties.
Now some, or the hostile actors themselves, will object to that view of mine, but public scrutiny applies to everyone that goes against the responsibilities of protecting actual free speech.

The Maiki Sherman lynch mob is frightening. This is the most hostile environment within which to be a political journalist I have known in my 55 years as a journo. The mob is ruling at the moment. They have tasted blood. Who will they turn on next?
