42 bunches of plantain for ₦70,000.

I thought the woman was joking.

She wasn’t.

We harvested a lot of plantain last week, but my boys mistakenly missed some bunches.

So we decided to go back today and harvest the remaining ones.

In total, we got 42 bunches.

Instead of calling our regular buyers, I said…

“Let’s even sell to those women by the roadside today.”

They are always waving at our trucks whenever we’re loading plantain out of the farm.

I figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have them as small-scale buyers.

After all…

There is nothing like having too many customers.

Little did I know we were about to receive the biggest shock of the day.

The moment we parked, the women rushed over.

They were all smiling.

Laughing.

Talking.

They insisted we should bring every bunch down so they could inspect them properly.

My boys brought everything down.

These women touched every bunch.

Pressed every bunch.

Turned them around.

Checked the size.

Checked everything.

After they were finally satisfied…

We started talking price.

I told them we were giving them a good price because they were first-time customers.

₦65,000 per dozen.

Since we had 42 bunches (3½ dozen), the total came to ₦227,500.

I even rounded it down to ₦220,000.

The next thing that came out of one woman’s mouth nearly gave me high blood pressure.

She said…

“We cannot pay more than ₦70,000 for everything.”

₦70,000.

For all 42 bunches.

I didn’t even argue.

Immediately she finished talking, I told my boys…

“Load everything back into the vehicle.”

She quickly changed tone.

“Ahh… it’s not a fight now. Let’s negotiate.”

I told her…

“It is a fight oh. You cannot price my sweat like that and tell me it’s not a fight.”

“I don’t negotiate with wicked people.”

“I don’t negotiate with enemies of progress.”

As she realized i was really angry, she started talking to my boys directly.

I immediately told every one of them…

“Nobody should answer her.”

We loaded everything back entered the vehicle and drove off.

Straight to Lagos.

We took it to one of the restaurants we normally sell to.

The same plantain…

Was later Sold for ₦270,000.

As a farmer, always make sure you have options.

And for the sake of your mental health avoid those women that sell produce on the road side the are the worst customers

Also Having multiple buyers is not a luxury. It’s your bargaining power.

I am not the least bit moved or worried by the composition of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. If the party likes, let it name Elon Musk as their DG and all the moneybags in the country as their members, we will still beat them silly in 2027.

Lagos state rolled out a new directive on dealer plates which I believe is just another means of extortion.

- This directive is being enforced by VIO which is a state authority on the use of a Federal license.

- The directive says car dealers cannot use their rightfully issued dealer plates on weekends and in the evening past 5pm.

The questions are

- What crimes have been commited under Nigerian law by driving a car with a valid dealer license?

- Why is Lagos state criminalising legitimate business?

- What law says dealers cannot carry out business on weekends or past a certain time of any day?

- How does the VIO define legitimate dealership activity and what laws backs the ones they don't count as legitimate especially if no crime is being committed?

There are many scenarios where a car under a dealership can be driven past 6pm on any day and on weekends.

The point of a dealer plate is vehicle identification incase a crime is committed with a vehicle. That way, law enforcement can trace the owner of the vehicle.

The government doesn't get to criminalise legitimate business under extortionate laws.

We cannot continue to live under draconian laws that only serve to extort and enrich those who carry out the extortion.

I will be launching or willing to join a law suit to test this aberration in the court of law and I'm open to collaborations.

Today is spot-manuring day on the cucumber project.

Every seed hole is getting dry, well-decomposed manure.

Once all the holes have been manured, we’ll turn on the water.

The drip lines will slowly deliver water directly to each spot.

That will help the soil soak and absorb the nutrients from the manure before we plant the seeds.

I don’t want the cucumber seeds going into an unprepared environment.

We prepare the soil first.

Then we plant.

You don’t wait for the crop to start struggling before you start giving them nutrients.

Big for me might your ACL
And big for you might be life ending for another person

And someone big farm is another person startup so please apply wisdom

Deep down you know what is big to you and what is small to you so use the advice wisely

Also try and pay experts for consultation before you go big

“Start small” that’s the biggest lie ever told in agriculture consulting

And this has probably killed more big farming dreams than lack of capital.

Yes.

I said it.

If you don’t have the resources
Start small.
Learn.
Expand.

That’s common sense.

But if you already have the money

Why are you pretending to be broke?

Go big.

Just don’t go big blindly.

Go big on knowledge too

Go big on experienced staff.

Go big on consultants.

Go big on systems.
Experience is cheaper than failure.

Here’s another thing I’ve noticed.

The I am just testing it gang

These are People who start with “small experiments” despite having the money

They usually quit first before the guys that actually start small because they don’t have money

Do you know Why?

Because they never truly committed.

They know they can always walk away.

Their mind already has an exit plan.

And when things get difficult they give up

8 out of 10 times they always quit.

A man’s commitment usually follows where he’s invested the most.

That’s why passion projects survive.

That’s why projects with huge capital invested survive.

Walking away is simply too expensive.

Look at Dangote.

He had never owned a refinery before.

Did he build a tiny refinery to “gain experience”?

No.

He built the largest single-train refinery in the world.

When pressure came that NNPC and some government officials were trying to frustrate him

He didn’t quit.

He fought harder.

The man that is hardly active on social media started granting interviews on Tv, he started putting out statements here on X

Do you know why?
Because he had too much skin in the game.

This is why I disagree with consultants who tell every wealthy client:

“Start small.”

No.

If the client has the capital…

Tell them to start big.

But make sure they also spend heavily on experience.

Because money builds farms.

Experience keeps them alive.

If you have the capacity to think big… don’t let fear disguise itself as wisdom.
