Today (24 June, 2026), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs repatriated Ethiopians who were serving long-term prison sentences in Saudi Arabia.
Notably, following intensive bilateral negotiations between the two governments, the prison sentences (up to 8 years) of 343 Ethiopian nationals were rescinded, and they have since safely returned to Ethiopia.
Through our citizen-centric diplomacy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to strengthen its efforts to ensure the safety of our citizens facing similar challenges in various countries by engaging with respective governments.
Simultaneously, our Ministry is working extensively to safeguard the rights and benefits of our citizens by signing legal employment agreements with Middle Eastern countries.
On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I call upon our citizens to fully understand the bitter reality of illegal migration and to choose legal pathways that protect their dignity, rights, and benefits, enabling them to benefit themselves, their families, and their country.

I was pleased to have convened a meeting of the National Coordination Committee for the Reception and Reintegration of Returnees, today, the 24th of June 2026 at our Ministry.
During the session, we conducted a productive evaluation of the detailed performance report presented by the National Committee. The discussions focused primarily on the strategic return, localized repatriation, and comprehensive rehabilitation of our citizens, who are being repatriated primarily from middle ecountries.
At the end of our deliberations, committee members engaged in a constructive exchange of ideas and reached a mutual consensus regarding upcoming collective and individual mandates, with a specific emphasis on achieving sustainable reintegration for our citizens into their communities. Furthermore, the Committee jointly assessed the critical need to strengthen coordinated frameworks between regional governments and development partners to optimize our ongoing rehabilitation efforts.

I had a constructive discussion with Mamadou Dian Balde, UNHCR Regional Bureau Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, on deepening our partnership to support refugees and host communities in Ethiopia.
Our exchange underscored the importance of sustainable refugee inclusion, enhanced international solidarity, predictable financing, and continued support for the implementation of the MAKATET ROADMAP, which seeks to transition from project-based interventions to integrated and sustainable approaches to refugee inclusion.
As one of Africaâs largest refugee-hosting countries, Ethiopia remains committed to upholding its open-door policy and advancing refugee protection and durable solutions. This commitment continues despite mounting challenges, including declining funding, climate-related shocks, increasing pressure on land and water resources, and the growing impact on the livelihoods of refugee-hosting communities.

This afternoon, I had a productive meeting with Ashraf Khodjaev, the non-resident Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Ethiopia. We reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between our two countries and explored ways to further strengthen our cooperation.
We agreed to expand collaboration across a range of sectors, including agriculture and agro-processing, textile and cotton value chains, mining and mineral development, renewable energy, manufacturing and industrial development, tourism, and cultural heritage management. As two landlocked countries facing similar challenges, we have also agreed to enhance cooperation on transport corridor diplomacy and transit rights.
As our diplomatic relations approach their 30th anniversary next month, I encouraged Uzbekistan to consider opening an embassy in Addis Ababa. Such a presence would help unlock the significant potential that exists between our two countries and further deepen our economic and bilateral cooperation.

The meeting brought together private transport investors in order to focus on establishing adequate, reliable, and high-quality transport services during major events we host in Addis Ababa. Such collaborative efforts are essential for building a positive national image and fostering sustainable, long-term capacity within our transport sector.
Beyond their profound diplomatic significance, such major international summits and conferences play a pivotal role in boosting tourism and driving the national economy. Recognizing this, our Ministryâin close coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics and other key stakeholdersâwill continue to provide the necessary support to ensure private investors play a leading role in the transport and logistics landscape.
