.@BBCAfrica interviewed AAA Advocacy Director @HoMan99: 'The influential US-based campaign group, the Amhara Association of America, went as far as to describe it (the Pretoria peace deal) as a "war pact" - a charge denied by Mr Abiy's government.'

The Heart-Wrenching Story of the Bahirdar Massacre : According to BBC Amharic , on a fateful August 8th, 2023, the city of Bahirdar in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia was gripped by a tragedy that would forever scar its history.
The night was eerily quiet, with the sounds of heavy weaponry tearing through the air from different directions. Amidst this terrifying symphony of destruction, the city's residents found themselves facing an agonizing choice - to seek refuge in their homes or to brave the dangers and attend their local churches.
One such individual was Mr. Ayenwe Defershim, a resident of Kebele 14. With unwavering faith, he left his house in the dead of the night, accompanied by his two sons, to attend the nearby Abune Hara Church. Little did he know that this decision would seal their fate.
His wife, Ababa Goshu, recalled the heart-wrenching moments leading up to their departure. "I got up to go to church," Mr. Ayenew told her, instructing her to stay at home while he took their older children. A mother's intuition kicked in when she became anxious about her family's whereabouts. She made a desperate call to her eldest son, only to hear a stranger's voice on the other end, saying, "Come and pick up the dead bodies!"
Mr. Ayenwe and his two children were brutally killed not far from their home. Left behind was a devastated wife and mother, grappling with the incomprehensible loss of her husband and sons.Ato Mulu Hasabu, Ayenew's younger brother, bore witness to the aftermath of the massacre. He and others had repeatedly tried to contact their loved ones as gunshots echoed through the night. When they finally got through, their worst fears were confirmed. A soldier's voice answered the call, saying chillingly, "They fell here, pick it up."
Amidst unimaginable grief, Ato Mulu and his niece ventured to the site where their loved ones were allegedly killed. The gruesome discovery of their lifeless bodies left them in a state of shock and disbelief. Ayenew's life had been extinguished alongside the lives of their nephews named Kasahun and Abraham. Another friend miraculously survived despite being hit on the neck.
The tragedy didn't stop there. Ato Mulu recounted the discovery of more victims - five bodies in one place, all bearing the marks of violence.According to Ato Mulu, disturbing accounts include the tragic accounts reveal the heart-wrenching loss of innocent lives as a mother searching for her child was tragically murdered. Equally unsettling is the case of a pregnant woman en route to the hospital on a stretcher to give birth, only to have her journey cut short by massacre . The individuals aiding her were not spared either.
The horrific scene described reveals the brutality suffered by these victims, as witnesses report finding lifeless bodies with gruesome injuries, torn heads, and exposed organs strewn across the streets. The depth of these senseless acts underscores the urgent need for attention and intervention to ensure the safety and security of the local population.
The magnitude of the tragedy was difficult to fathom, as the number of civilian casualties remained unknown. Bahirdars’s Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital bore witness to the heartbreaking aftermath, with doctors tending to wounded individuals who had endured the horrors of violence. Among the wounded were the most vulnerable a 5-month-old baby and the elderly – innocent lives caught in a maelstrom of massacre .
Yet, the tragedy extended beyond Bahirdar. The historic city of Gondar and the industrial city of Debre Berhan also experienced the devastating impact of the massacre .In Gondar's hospitals, medical staff confronted the heartbreaking reality of the conflict. Among the wounded were individuals of all ages, including a 16-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman. Their stories served as a poignant reminder of the indiscriminate nature of the massacre, which spares no one, regardless of age or circumstance.
