Our first win at YarnGPT came before we launched.

Some days before launch @mekwunyeclinton called me and told me "Saheed abeg I need your help, you said YarnGPT is coming, when is it coming, we need a voiceover for this hackathon".

Apparently they were participating in the recently concluded zenith bank hackathon and they needed something to generate a voiceover for their solution, their products name was "Konfam". They tried elevenlabs and it struggled with pronouncing their solution name.

I sharply opened my laptop, restarted the VM and I sent the site to @mekwunyeclinton. They generated the voiceovers and they were very impressed by the quality. E get some bugs wey them point me to sha💀.

Last Thursday, they presented their project at the final stage of the challenge in the presence of the governor of Lagos State @jidesanwoolu and Jim Ovia!

To cut the long story short, my guys took second place and won 10 million Naira at the zenith bank hackathon.

I got a real-looking “Support” email from an app saying my account would be suspended because I hadn’t logged in for a while (they were right).

It looked legit. I even saw the same notification when I logged in but it was a scam.

What NOT to do:

• Don’t click links in emails, even if everything looks legit (I didn’t, but it just goes without saying)

• Don’t enter card details on pages you didn’t navigate to yourself (they took me to a similarly designed website, it was truly convincing until I looked closely at the url)

• Don’t ignore small red flags like a “test fee” (many legit companies ask for a test fee so be careful)

• Don’t proceed when asked to confirm your account balance. (Duh! But they made me type my card details without a thought and this rang so many alarm bells only after)

• Don’t click unfamiliar buttons (they disguised Pay as “Proceed”)

I rolled up to Lagos to keynote #AgentCon Nigeria 🇳🇬 and scope out #DatafestAfrica but then…

I discovered there is a GIANT #MicrosoftFabric community in Nigeria.

It was a joy to share a few words about what data nerds can be doing given African data is apparently only about 1% of the global AI dataset.

1. Identifying the data gaps that make AI Actually Useful for Nigeria

2. Figure out how to fill these gaps. Synthetic data? Weighting data differently? RLHF? Finetuning? RAG?

3. Solve LOCAL problems with your shiny clean data set and infinite knowledge

We in the west are NOT going to be able to solve Nigerian problems the way you will….if you rely on us, you’ll end up with Uber for Fruit Delivery 😹

Nigerian solutions to Nigerian problems, let’s go team! 🇳🇬

1. So many data engineers and analysts in one room! Without good data, there is NO AI!

2. The focus on building Africa-centric projects in the AI-verse —right now Africa supplies only 1% of global AI datasets…we need to increase this!

3. A sign interpreter on stage to everyone feels included!
