The White House released a statement blaming Canada for walking away from trade talks, which takes some nerve given that Prime Minister Carney says Washington rewrote the terms at the last minute. Trump’s negotiators apparently believe a deal is something you agree on Tuesday and amend at gunpoint on Friday.

So now 50 percent tariffs have landed on nearly 30 billion dollars of Canadian goods, covering everything from lumber to hockey sticks.

Here is the part the statement forgot to mention: tariffs are paid by American importers, which means American builders, retailers and families just got handed a 50 percent cost increase courtesy of their own government. The US Chamber of Commerce warned exactly this would happen.
