Courageous, gracious Lucy. She reminds us that there are too many women in #PNG who endure daily physical, psychological abuse. We have a long way to go. I agree with Keith, PNG "needs more people like Lucy Maino, and less men who rush to judgment on a woman in a dance video."
"Trust" not associated with #PNG politicians, yet some vaccinated ahead of health workers in an effort to "demonstrate safety". Vaccinating doctors & nurses, pastors (eg.Fiji ⬇️), even scientists; people that public actually trust might have been a better strategy to quell fears.
It was nighttime when Donna took her husband to the Rita Flynn COVID-19 field hospital.
In a tent outside, she had to hold her mobile with its torchlight on, to allow workers to assess him, as there was no power. He was admitted, 11 days later he was dead. https://t.co/tJqZ2D9hZN
'Papua New Guinea's COVID cases are driven by misinformation — we need tech companies to help.'

#PNG needs to be open-minded in considering all offers of vaccines. Yes, review the safety and efficacy data carefully, but be open to all help offered. Control of our epidemic, incl. emergence of variants, is not just about PNGean lives. Our response impacts the region's safety.
'It starts with telling women they should cover up. It starts with telling women, they shouldn’t dance like that.'

Lucy Maino was a #PNG representative, gold medalist and role model way before her Miss PNG role. Put some respect on the young woman's name.

@LSJorari highlights that this incident reveals a deep-seated culture of misogyny in the country. Strong words from Governor Bird: "What kind of society condemns the torture and killing of women yet gets upset when a young woman does a dance video?” #PNG https://t.co/IzjDTMI7jp
A shipment of AstraZeneca vaccines from India will arrive in #PNG within a fortnight, after fears it could be delayed by months by export restrictions. 132,000 doses will arrive under COVAX program. So far 558 people have been vaccinated in PNG from the 8000 doses donated by Aus.
Facebook says it’s launched a prompt to direct Papua New Guineans to credible information about COVID19. It says it will be near the top of News Feed and will include prevention tips. Misinformation a huge issue here. I can’t see it yet, but will report back when it appears. #PNG
Eastern Highlands is grieving the loss of former Governor, Mal "Kela" Smith CMG.MBE.DFC. Mal, the founder and owner of the Pacific Helicopter Group, wore many hats, including Chair of the Goroka Hospital Board. He will be greatly missed 💔 COVID-19 doesn't discriminate. #PNG
I think this, in part, is also our problem: “The problem is not people being uneducated. The problem is that they are educated just enough to believe what they have been taught and not educated enough to question what they have been taught.” (Author Unknown)
I've heard reports that Vunapope Hospital in Kokopo, East New Britain, is facing a similar crisis. I hope that there has been equitable distribution of PPE, vaccines and other resources recently received by #PNG.
Prof Ian Mackay just flagged this great thread. @Duresi_Bee or anyone else who might be interested in variants and antibody responses, check this out. A bit technical in parts, but solid science explained.
We knew at the start of March that a third of cases reported to date in #PNG were detected in February alone. We knew then that a COVID-19 surge was underway. We also knew that the mourning period would accelerate this surge.
