Friends! I need your help. What are your favorite examples of political speeches where folks made mistakes (intentionally or not)? Or of advertisements that try to be vague in order to sell a product? Or of newspapers that cover different stories in different ways?
I'm working on a book on a Susan Stebbing's kick ass notion of common sense. I want to apply her notion to things going on today. Stebbing wrote a textbook on logic using motsly examples from politics, the media and advertising, and I want to mimic that.
New Cambridge Element Classical First-Order Logic by Stewart Shapiro and @teresakouri out now! Read for free for 2 weeks #cambridgeelements#philosophy https://t.co/3f9GOH7DSC
In it, we provide the details of a classical first-order system and compare it to some alternatives (higher-order, intuitionistic, and some paraconsistent stuff).
I'm super excited to say that the Element Stu Shapiro and I wrote on classical first-order logic is now out! Check it out here https://t.co/3tJqYdsKz3. Access is free until May 12!
This week in the Logic Colloquium: Teresa Kouri Kissel @teresakouri (Old Dominion) on “Distinguishing between merely verbal disputes and metalinguistic negotiations”. Friday, Feb 18, 2:30 EST, on Zoom. Details on how to join and abstract here: https://t.co/D94csuEU28
I'm going to write a book giving a precise definition of common sense (for Stebbing), showing how it can inform directional analysis, and using that to develop new (or, rather, revitalize old) teaching methods for critical thinking classes.
I am so excited to say that I'll be starting an @NEHgov fellowship in the fall. I'll spend the year working on Stebbing, common sense and critical thinking. I cannot wait to get started!
My better half is running a conference on Friday to celebrate the completion of his @NEH_ODH grant. Come learn about VR and Philosophy! More info: https://t.co/WfOC8mz5Na.
@a_kissel is not really on here anymore, but he just won a @NEH_ODH Digital Humanities Advancement Grant! I am so impressed by him! @OduPhilosophy@NEHgov
@RrrichardZach @remarkablepaper@wacom I wound up with an iPad and pencil in the end at the suggestion of @larkofadefinite. So far they're working great!
Well, this feels silly (but hopefully not in poor taste): I have some money which was meant to go towards travel this year that I need to spend by June. I can use it for books and other research-related things. I'm taking suggestions! What would you buy? I'm open to anything!
On June 10th, the Logic Supergroup participated in #ShutDownAcademia in support of #BlackLivesMatter and the protests against racial injustice. I wrote a summary of it. Check it out: https://t.co/OX5c7IUPSg
