Jack reads most people correctly most of the time. He isn’t naive. He has good instincts for when to trust and when not to, when people close to him are lying, and when he can bring someone into a relationship of mutual loyalty with him.
The rational part of him fighting it. But by the end of S1, it’s too late. They are doomed to love each other, breaking each other down until Jack is ready to save the world, as he does, with Kate there to kill to protect who she loves, as she does. She has his back.
Jack realises early on that Kate is impulsive, untethered. That she will probably hurt him. But because they are already bonded by circumstance/fate, and because of his own attachment dysfunction, it only draws the prerational part of Jack to her even more.
