🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Happy St. David's Day. Before Wales had theatres, it had audiences. In the 6th century, St. David gathered crowds in fields and on hillsides to hear him speak. Churches were too small, so stories were told outdoors, shaped by rhythm, voice and gesture so everyone could follow. That tradition continued through the bards and storytellers who carried the tales of the Mabinogion, holding communities together through shared listening. So today we’re not only celebrating our patron saint, but the roots of Welsh storytelling itself.

Theatre "bonds us and connects us and that ultimately is the importance of the arts" says actor Michael Sheen.

His production 'Our Town' is debuting tonight in Swansea.

Sheen created and funded the Welsh National Theatre after the arts scene in Wales was left reeling when funding cuts led to the end of National Theatre Wales.
