Congratulations to my friend @JeromyYYC on being elected Mayor of the great city of Calgary! And congrats to all councillors elected & re-elected.

When an incumbent is defeated, I have always thanked them for their service, even if I disagree strongly with their policies.

But I’m going to make an exception for Jyoti Gondek.

Two months following the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, she boycotted the highest profile public celebration of the Jewish community in Calgary every year, the Chanukah menorah lighting at City Hall.

During a tidal wave of antisemitism across the world, she rejected one of our smallest and most vulnerable communities. And I believe she did so for craven political reasons.

By doing so, she degraded her office and embarrassed our city.

For that one reason alone, I am happy that Calgarians have chosen change that will unite us, not divide us.

Confederation is a failed experiment. It's just a geographic reality. We're too big of a land mass, with half our people sprinkled across a huge area, and the other half concentrated in a couple of cities out east.

Our Constitutional Monarchy is designed to fail.

The only solution would be a total redesign, but the people who benefit from the current deal aren't willing to give up their power and the disproportionate benefits they get from the work of others.

We saw it clearly in the last decade, and after the latest federal election.

If Albertan was a separate country today, there's no way we would join Canada.

Just think of it has a failed mariage, with one partner wanting out after years of counselling. We have irreconcilable differences.

As far as I'm concerned, provinces like Quebec, BC and Saskatchewan would also be wise to see a separation.
