truly honoured to have broken down the quietly essential music merch market for @water_and_music + @residentadvisor, with a little help from @tersha and @andthe_machine 🧢👕

i am super proud to have contributed a piece on the music merch market featuring merch legends @tersha and @andthe_machine
i've been pitching pieces on music merch for years, and i'm so chuffed @residentadvisor and @water_and_music have finally given my obsession a home
It’s that time of year again where I remind new founders to enter @The_Pitch - so much our success is down to things I learnt being part of this! Link below:

@seaninsound It’s possible and I’d prefer that to be the case! Be interesting to look back at 2008 to see how music looked then and to see if we chose music/ merch over holidays and big purchases.
@kevinduquette VCs encouraged a run on their and their startups preferred bank because they didn’t like the look of SVB shoring up their balance sheet (was right thing to do) You should care if you have an SVB account with over $250k in it or if any partner/supplier/service you work with does
@DrownedinSound The Murder Capital actually dropped on a Friday, but the midweeks were where everyone started listening. Caroline Polachek wanted to release her record on Valentines Day, it fell where it fell + she also has BIG shows booked for her w1 so could sell records at those shows
@seaninsound Know I’m biased, but merch is rewarding for both fans and artists and even as someone who has unlimited access to free merch, I still buy it and I love buying it. It also works better for musicians than it does for any other creator segment
@seaninsound We’ve seen more than one artist build valuable relationships with fans via Tiktok that directly translated into sold out shows globally + huge merch sales. Kinda like Facebook before paid adverts - it won’t last forever… is it random or is there a method to make that happen?
@seaninsound@onionrick Think that’s likely more related to global supply chain pressures, recessions, war and inflation. Global Market conditions are pretty wild these days, so it’s hard to make a plan and budget from 6 months ago (or more) work, but that’s also true for a lot of other industries
Almost all music industry conversations eventually lead to the subject of superfans (and money) We spent a whole evening talking about it last week and you can read about it below
🙏@katolivia94 for inviting me to @water_and_music's Wavelengths #3

q of the night: in the internet's infinity & ever-sought realization of the 1000 true fans prophecy, how do we find each other?

@seaninsound Absolutely… The music industry glosses over struggles making success stories look like easy ‘overnight success’ and that’s a lie. TV/Film, startups, comedy, art etc - everyone has families, day jobs and seemingly impossible deliverables/schedules, but it’s not a secret
@seaninsound@onionrick Brexit needs to be treated as an export opportunity, much like we treat the US market. We had it easy and good for while… On a more optmisitc note if Australian and US artists can make the EU make good financial sense, so can British artists
