I think of Aaron Swartz often.

I think of how he was so much smarter than me and he saw what was coming and he ended his life.

He had his girlfriend, fans, techies, great law professors like @lessig and others by his side and he saw what the DOJ was and he ended it.

I think often about doing the same. My faith, with which I have a deeply unstable relationship, prevents me from doing the same.

That's not really honestly. My fear that we come back worse, that the test gets harder and more brutal prevents me. It has stopped me with the rope tied to the ceiling and around my neck, feet at the edge of the table, looking at my dog for the last time. It has stopped me with the bag and tape over my head. It has stopped me at the edge of the balcony 17 floors up.

I think about how Aaron was right and kind to himself. How he didn't have to live through the years of fighting for his freedom, breaking from isolation and captivity, illness in prison, watching people who rallied for him give up as he broke from the system that is designed to break you and has endless sums to do it.

Aaron saw what was and he got off the ride.

He didn't wait to beg the Elon Musks and @shaunmmaguire s and @ericmreiner s to put their words and connections and action behind their faith and free a Jew who was no danger to anyone and should not be facing a cage. He did not wait until his girlfriend couldn't take it, or until she aborted their child out of fear the father would be i in a cage for years.

He didn't wait to see @AlanDersh free only the rich donors, and brag about how he could have gotten Jeffrey Epstein off were he really a spy.

He didn't wait to see Chabad funnel donations for pardons for only those who stole enough from medicaid and the elderly to afford bribes.
