An FIR for abetment and criminal conspiracy was eventually registered, yet the case never received the nationwide outrage, nonstop media trials or emotional sympathy normally seen when the victim is female.

Meanwhile, the Twisha Sharma case triggered instant headlines, reward announcements, aggressive coverage and nationwide pressure within hours because society reacts very differently when the victim is a woman. This brutal contrast exposes how male suffering is often treated as secondary, negotiable or emotionally irrelevant, even when a man d!es alleging mental t*rture inside marriage.

Aman Kumar Sharma was not just a statistic. He was a son, a judge and a human being who allegedly cried for help before collapsing completely under psychological pressure. If justice, outrage and public sympathy depend on the victim’s gender, then this is not equality — this is selective empathy.

His name is Boren Mondal.

In 2002 a Sessions Court in Malda convicted him under Section 498A for cruelty to his wife.

He was sentenced to 2 years rigorous imprisonment.

His wife had consumed poison. She said “I will be dead” before dying.

The court treated that as a dying declaration.

24 years later the Calcutta High Court set aside that conviction.

Justice Chaitali Chatterjee Das said the words “I will be dead” do not constitute a dying declaration in the eye of law.

The prosecution had no specific proof of cruelty. No prior complaint was ever filed. The victim’s own brother admitted the husband generally behaved properly.

Even the mother admitted she filed the case out of grudge after her daughter’s death.

24 years. For a case that should never have stood.

Boren Mondal is free today.

24 years later.
