The EU IUU Fishing Coalition (Environmental Justice Foundation, @oceana, @nature_org, @pewtrusts, and @WWFEU) is a key partner in fighting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
Reaffirmed EU's commitment in showcasing leadership in fisheries governance and transparency. The enforcement of the IUU Regulation and the fight against IUU fishing remain our priority.
Transparency at sea is key to ending illegal fishing and ensuring responsible ocean policies.
Today at the UN Ocean Conference, @OceanaEurope’s Vanya Vulperhorst stressed the urgent need for stronger fisheries oversight to protect fishers, consumers, and our oceans. #UNOC3
Today, the members of the #IUU Fishing Action Alliance (IUU-AA) met at #UNOC3, where they discussed the importance of transparency of vessel ownership information. An analysis conducted by the European Union's IUU Coalition shows that vessel ownership information is outdated in the @FAOfish Global Record. Countries must do more to collect, use and publish this information 👉 https://t.co/k9Esr18E48
We have instruments to combat flags of convenience and illegal fishing, like the EU Control Regulation. Open registries allow abuse of fishing practices. Beneficial ownership is identified as an illegal fishing support that we want to stop, states @fernandguim from @EU_Commission
We have the tools to combat Flags of Convenience and fight #IUUfishing, eg EU Control Reg. Open registries allow for abuses. #BeneficialOwnership supports #IUU, we want to stop it, says Mr Andresen, @EU_MARE International Ocean Governance & Sustainable Fisheries Director. #UNOC3
🇪🇺 Member States are not paying enough attention to their citizens and companies that own fishing vessels flagged to countries outside Europe. It’s urgent that they take action to avoid the risk of illegal fishing benefits flowing back to the EU, says @VVulperhorst#UNOC3
“Some EU-owned vessels use shell companies, change flags & fish in countries with weak oversight. Not controlling these activities undermines the EU’s zero tolerance policy against illegal fishing” states our Illegal Fishing campaign director @VVulperhorst. #UNOC3#UNOC#UNOC2025

Transparency is an essential foundation of effective fisheries management. So why haven’t most IUU Action Alliance members yet shared basic up-to-date vessel data? Ahead of #UNOC3, Oceana calls for real actionnot just words. #OceanGovernance#IUUFishing

13/ @IgnacioFresco@OceanaEurope says we should look at the beneficiary state or the owner state responsibility (on top of flag, port, market state responsible):
"We are good at looking at what our fleets are doing but not so much at our citizens who are profiting from #IUU"
9/ Roberto Cesari, @EU_MARE reminds that under Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements the concepts of transparency and sustainability go in pair "because otherwise, how can we determine there is a surplus if we do not know what is the total fishing effort?"

Beneficial ownership #transparency is crucial to know who benefits from fishing, who is actually utilising national quotas and to go after the real beneficiaries of #IUU fishing. This latest @UNODC paper is an excellent introduction to the topic.
#IUUFishing undermines ocean sustainability.
A #OOC10 side event by @ejfoundation will highlight how transparency, accountability, and community leadership can transform fisheries management and protect livelihoods.

Unclear whether funding support for the #OceanPact will take the form of an #OceanFund or whether it will rely on a mix of other financial instruments, says Commissioner @CostasKadis. What is clear is that funding will be needed if objectives are to be met. #BlueManifesto
1 in 5 fish caught illegally.
128,000 people trapped in forced labour.
There is a crisis in the global fishing sector. The UN Ocean Conference is the moment to change this, and France must lead the way. @AgnesRunacher@EmmanuelMacron@jnbarrot
