This is primarily a journal of the places I've been and the things I've done, along with a collection of things I find interesting or profound. Greetings!
I'm noticing that most of my posts appear to be food-related, as of late... AND HERE'S ANOTHER ONE! 🤣🤣Few days late, but here was our Valentine's Day feast! Antipasto salad, yummy, yummy CAKE and a heart-shaped Canadian bacon pizza!
What a thrilling life I lead. I baked a cake. Lime Gateau. Now I remember why I hate baking so much; LOTS of work, little reward. Was so-so. Got a bit dry, but flavor was OK. Looks festive, at least! Cooking fun; baking - not so much. Will still do it again, though.
I went to high school in a neighboring town, and would come to the old town area on occasion. This was one of our old hang-outs, a record store which bought and sold vinyl, tapes and CDs. It was novel at the time that you could open them and listen to them before purchasing them.
This was right down the street from our old house. The houses there are now a century old. People assume that they were built during the post-WWII boom, but they were built in 1923-24. They're so old that they weren't built with garages - not enough people owned automobiles then.
As you can see, it retains that classic diner charm and ambiance. It's decked out in mid-century-mod decor - checkered floors, vintage-patterned wallpaper, chrome accents and a small counter - throwbacks to a bygone era I still fondly remember. Had my usual bacon & egg sandwich.
This cafe is a Whittier institution, one I highly recommend if you're in the area. I have very fond memories of coming here as a kid with my parents & extended family-most of whom have since passed on. It's located just down the street from our former, now-century-old house.
Another place I have fond memories of! My dad would go EVERY SATURDAY MORNING, to get donuts for us here. My favorite were the cinnamon rolls... so, of course, I stopped off and had one! This donut shop has been on this corner for probably more than a half-century at this point!
Some of my earliest memories were of this guy, "Leo the Lion." I remember that I got in trouble one time when I was very young for trying to "ride" him! He used to be situated where kids could touch him, but since he's now older than I am he was put behind a protective casing.
This is a place where I spent more time than I can count. It recently underwent a major interior renovation, but there weren't as many changes as I was expecting. I did stop in for a few minutes. They have an amazing children's section, where my parents took me almost every week.
During another rare outing, I took a short detour to stop by a town where we used to live. It's always been one of my favorite places in SoCal. Thought I'd upload a short photo diary of my afternoon adventure there.
It apparently likes it, because the blossoms are getting more prolific with each passing year. It still hasn't quite figured out the timing, however-it blooms BEFORE it leafs out! Still pretty. Maybe one day it will get the hang of it! It bloomed a bit earlier than last year.
Spring has Sprung! My near-twenty-year-old wisteria plant, trimmed to stay in tree form, which has only in the last couple of years begun to actually bloom! I relented a few years ago, now, and got permission to have it planted in the ground, here in the complex.
Had a little bit of excitement this morning. This was centered a couple of miles south of a little touristy, mining town called Julian. Main event measured in at 5.2... respectable, but not major.
Let's hope it stays that way! It's April 14, after all ....
Today is one of the most inauspicious days in US history.
1865: Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
1912: Titanic Strikes Iceberg: sinks early morning hours of April 15
1935: Black Sunday Dust Storm in US Midwest: term "Dust Bowl" coined
And we're off to the races! Because...
