On Friday, DPS honored fallen Trooper Randall Wade Vetter at a boat dedication ceremony in Canyon Lake. Trooper Vetter tragically lost his life on Aug. 7, 2000, succumbing to injuries he sustained during a traffic stop near Kyle just a few days before.
Trooper Vetter courageously served his fellow Texans, and his legacy has left a lasting impact on this department. This patrol vessel named in his honor will serve as a permanent reminder of his service and sacrifice.
Turns out drought really does put the “brown” in “green-up season.” Oklahoma vegetation looked far healthier in May 2025 than it does this year, thanks to the dramatic expansion of drought across western and central Oklahoma. https://t.co/S0zmtLHmwU #okwx#okmesonet

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) extends our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Retired Colonel James R. Wilson, who passed away earlier today.
Colonel Wilson’s legendary career and leadership in law enforcement will be forever etched into the history of DPS and the Lone Star State. Starting as a young Texas Highway Patrol Trooper in the 1960s, he spent nearly 30 years rising among DPS’ ranks – even earning a degree from South Texas College of Law along the way – before serving as Colonel from 1991 to 1996. Even after his retirement, Colonel Wilson remained a steadfast friend and partner to DPS during his time as Sheriff of Williamson Co. and as a private citizen.
Colonel Wilson was a true lawman, and our state and this agency are better off because of his leadership.
