The First Glimpse of Our World from Another World

On August 23, 1966, at exactly 16:35 GMT, humanity got its first true look at Earth from the Moon.

As NASA’s Lunar Orbiter 1 swung through its 16th orbit and prepared to slip behind the lunar far side, its camera locked onto a breathtaking sight: a delicate, glowing blue-and-white marble hanging in the black void above the Moon’s stark, cratered horizon.

That single frame — the left photograph — marked a historic first. For the first time ever, we saw our home planet not as the center of everything, but as a distant, fragile sphere rising over an alien landscape.
