My greatest challenge yet: trying to figure out what the heck is going on with Charlie Morton. The answer is pretty simple. The fix? A little more complicated. Read more here: https://t.co/UC7uPb0bOH
@bens0xred@dannybarrand_ Now, yes. Blake Snell probably has 55 or 60 grade command at this point. But up until his 2023 cy young, it was probably solidly 40 grade command across the board, and from 2016-2019 he navigated it primarily through being "effectively wild."
@PEARatings Also like—in terms of teams that win championships—generally teams that are able to consistently produce high run scoring games, because they force teams to play near the peak of their run distribution just to keep even, if that makes sense.
@PEARatings I’m gonna say batting average, because I think it has relevant implications for how well you are going to handle high level pitching, and if your offense will still be able to produce runs against better stuff arms.
@dannybarrand_ Like, I think if you’re hoping for a guy who’s gonna run a 6-8% walk rate, you’d be looking in the wrong place. He will probably be able to run a 25-30% K rate and a 9-11% walk rate and it will be inefficient but it will be a low ERA and it will be fine.
@dannybarrand_ Blake Snell already proved that this is essentially the optimal way to run that profile. The release height will generate enough chase on the breakers to essentially make up the difference. And if he’s discretionary about FF usage, it’s basically a non-issue.
@bens0xred@BenCampb_ "fire the medical staff" is what every fan wants every season and no one wants to just accept that guys get hurt more and it's not a workload management or medical diagnostics/treatment issue
@hecubian_devil Like, we can continue to add funding to schools and slowly alleviate parents of more and more responsibility until children are effectively assets of the state being cared for 12 hours a day, constantly supplying educational and emotional support.
@hecubian_devil But what's the actual policy prescription here? Okay, we believe that SES in childhood contributes significantly to early learning impairment. I don't mean to strawman the argument here, but unlimited cash welfare for children seems like an inefficient use of Fed dollars.
My (Very Late) 2026 D3 CWS Preview. I'm not sure why I didn't share it sooner, but I wanted to make it available to read in case anyone is interested in how I viewed the field in Eastlake. https://t.co/LBC7GrghYV
@jjcoop36 I also think, generously, many people are working with an outdated mental model of college baseball.
Guys are not showing up to power 4 schools as undersized projectable guys. Everybody I’ve met committed to a D1 school already has a really high level physical engine.
@jjcoop36 Have you compared breaking ball % to ERA? I don’t think the actual thesis here (steelmanning his argument) is that the lack of velo is what gets outs, rather the ability to rely on non-fastball pitches. Just my 2 cents.
@DolphinMossad A lot of there being less poop in the wealthier neighborhoods is that in the denser portions of Manhattan, the apartment buildings are doorman buildings, who are usually responsible for cleaning off the sidewalk. You have a lot more walk ups in upper Manhattan and the Bronx.
@DownToBlack Hitter vision is calibrated to averages. Most sliders will have movement ranges of 5-8” in each plane. So a pitch that’s 4” horizontal movement on average might be anywhere from 0” to 8” on a given pitch. But the hitter still looks for 4, and can adjust in either direction.
@DSteg_PHX Also, there’s not a single HS pitching rotation in the country a guy throwing 85-87 with 3 pitches for strikes isn’t the #1. And I played for one of the top prep schools in the country.
Can’t say I’m familiar with JuCo in AZ, but I’m guessing they aren’t going to waste their time on a low upside mid-80s arm. They make their money by getting guys transferring to 4 years, so they want guys who start out at least 90+ obviously if I had to guess. I think the JuCo circuit in the south west is very competitive as well.
When I’m playing a doubleheader on a Saturday, I don’t care if the catcher takes 2 minutes getting his gear on because we have a backup catcher and I have nowhere else to be.
During summer ball, I’d like to be in and out as quickly as possible, so we are going to courtesy run for our pitchers and catchers when it makes sense!
@RobertStock6 I thought I had been experiencing symptoms, and I did a whole bunch of eastern medicine type stuff and it seems to have gone away. I managed to free up my rib cage and scap and it relieved some of the pressure under my collarbone. Symptoms have basically vanished.
