He put it in his contract.
"When I signed on to do the film, I got in my contract that the ending had to stay."

Why?

He'd already seen a previous project change a controversial ending.
"I had experience on something before where something that was controversial got cut out."
"And to me, it was why we go to movies."

Sure enough, after filming, there was pressure to change Se7en's ending.
"There was this push... it would be much more likable if the dog's heads were in the box."

His response was immediate.
