An example of the arcane Anime home video lore I am digging through in order to make the best home video quality comparison videos I possibly can for Youtube:-

So recently I uploaded a video to Youtube (The first for my channel actually) which was a beginner's guide to collecting Anime on different home video formats. In it I mentioned that certain Anime DVD boxsets released in the US and UK were beloved for their aesthetics and even if they had been re-released in higher quality on a format like Blu Ray sometimes the original release with nicer artwork or other features was sought after and still fetched a high price regardless.

Here is a prime example of that....Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Oh Ki Ultimate Edition boxed set released by Pioneer in 1999.

What's important to note is that while they released a scaled down cheaper DVD release of individual volumes later....the 1999 version has a THX certified transfer, exclusive extras including a Tenchi Encyclopedia disc and much nicer packaging with a cool see through slipcased digipak featuring Ryoko and Ryo-Oh Ki art.

For years I've owned the individual Pioneer releases that came out shortly afterwards and the UK Complete DVD boxset from MVM which also contained the Mihoshi special
What's important to note is these last ones can still be obtained cheaply but the Ultimate edition as you might have guessed is very sought after and the scalpers and price gougers regularly charge a few hundred quid for it (See below).

However as I strive to compare all of these releases to the best of my ability I have managed to snag a really reasonably priced version of the Ultimate Edition to compare for you lovely people.

The series is in print in the UK but not the US from what I can tell and is currently on Blu ray from MVM but it's a featureless disc missing all of the previous extras and it doesn't contain the specials either.

Also hoping to obtain a copy of the Madman complete set from Australia which is similar to the MVM set but with some of the things from the ultimate edition.

It's a good job I care about this stuff as no-one else is making content about it. Stick with me and I'll help you find the best disc editions of all the old Anime you're nostalgic about!
