Interesting announcement by $PLS this morning. $PLS is going to add another 150kt of spodumene concentrate to their existing offtake agreement with Ganfeng, bringing the total to 310kt this year. Here are my thoughts whilst I sip my morning coffee.

Why would Ganfeng suddenly want to almost double their offtake with $PLS?

Following on from my previous post, I mentioned that the reason China was suppressing the price with low grade internal sources (lepidolite) was to bide time to build stakes in overseas, high quality lithium plays and to gain more buying power to get access to cheaper material (spod concentrate). Well, we are seeing the later right now. China are locking in large amounts of spod concentrate at the very suppressed market price.

They aim to soak up the current supply while the market price is low, essentially building a stockpile. Battery manufacturers who aren't following a similar strategy will encounter supply shortages, along with delays in acquiring new supplies. Both will lead to higher prices in time.

This is due to the time required to restart mines that are currently closed or under maintenance ($CXO for an example), and also those that need to be constructed. Consequently, these manufacturers will face increased costs for lithium in the future.

On a separate but related note regarding price, Goldman Sachs are saying that a lithium carbonate price of $US11,000 is possible.

@globallithium in one of his posts mentioned that the math doesn't check out for a Lithium Carbonate price this low. He's 100% right and here's why (below is for Hydroxide):

7 tonnes of SC6 is needed for 1 tonne of LiOH
Current spot price of SC6 = $US1000.
Lithium Hydroxide Processing Costs - $3500-$4000

7 x $US1000 + $US4000 = $US11,000.

The cost price to make 1 tonne of LiOH is around $11,000... Mind you most Australian spodumene producers are dying at around these spodumene prices...🤪
