The children of Somali dictator Siad Barre have been living quietly in Columbus, Ohio, alongside people who fled his brutal regime.

Barre ruled Somalia for more than two decades. His regime has been accused of atrocities that left as many as 200,000 people dead.

His son Ayanle and daughter Deka came to the United States after Barre was overthrown in 1991.

An Oxford researcher told the New York Post that Ayanle was his father's “right-hand man” and wielded significant power during the final years of the dictatorship. Some survivors are now calling for U.S. authorities to investigate what members of Barre's family knew or did during the regime.

One Somali man living in Ohio said members of his family were rounded up, executed and their bodies thrown into a well. He said he was shocked to later see Ayanle at his local mosque.

Deka and her late husband operated Vanguard Home Health Care, which received more than $1.8 million in Medicare funding.

And the Somali Museum of Ohio has referred to Siad Barre as its “honorable grandfather.”

For survivors who escaped Barre's regime only to find members of his family living in the same Ohio community, those wounds never went very far away.

This is why we need real journalists out there with the resources to cover stories like this. If we still had that, this would already be well covered & yet after all this time we are just learning bits of the truth. The people of Asheville people deserve better. We all do. Disasters can strike any community anywhere and we need to know we will get the support we pay for as taxpayers. As always, it is the principles that are at stake. And our humanity.
