Ethiopian Embassy to the Republic of Uganda @ETEmbassyKLA Wishes a Happy International Women’s Day 2026 (March 8)!
"Rights, Justice, Action For ALL Women and Girls."
Today, we celebrate the achievements of women while acknowledging the urgent need to address persistent gender inequalities. It is a day to honor the strength, leadership, and invaluable contributions of women worldwide whose efforts have sustained life and shaped civilization throughout history, often without equal recognition.
Our Embassy reflects this commitment: led by a female Ambassador, @EtsegenetYimenu, with more than 50% of our diplomatic staff being women, demonstrating Ethiopia’s dedication to women’s empowerment and inclusivity in decision-making at all levels.
On this International Women’s Day, as part of the celebration, we launched the Ethiopian Women's Association in Uganda (EWAU) & reaffirmed our commitment to advancing women’s resilience, leadership, equality, justice, and opportunity for all. @MFAEthiopia@UgandaMFA #FDREMoWSA @Mglsd_UG@UGDiplomat
Tonight, the Embassy of the FDRE in Kampala @ETEmbassyKLA participated in the Iftar program organized by Serena Kampala Hotel @SerenaKampala.
During the event, we presented the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and shared the story of how Kald, the legendary shepherd, discovered coffee while herding his goats.
Alongside the coffee ceremony, we also delivered a brief presentation on the history of Islam and its deep-rooted ties with #Ethiopia, dating back to the time of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), when the first followers of Islam sought refuge in Ethiopia for safety and protection from persecution by the Quraysh.
This historic migration reflects the longstanding relationship of mutual respect and hospitality between Ethiopia and the Muslim world.

We welcomed the Ugandan girls dressed in traditional Habesha attire, with yellow embroidery “ጥለት” like “ our Adey flower” flowers 🌼🌼🌼💛💛💛. Their Ethiopian sisters from Mesob Radio added another vibrant element to the day!
It was a wonderful experience filled with enjoyment and learning about each other's cultures. Growing up in Ethiopia, we would often sing the special traditional song “Abeba Ayesh Woy” during Enkutatash, our New Year celebration.
Listening to the Ugandan girls sing “Abeba Ayesh Woy” in Amharic truly exemplified cultural exchange. We also demonstrated some childhood games from a time before the Internet and smartphones—just pure fun and play, promoting both mind and body connections between people 🇪🇹🇺🇬.
I took a moment to explain my outfit, which many mistakenly thought represented the Ugandan flag. 🇺🇬
In reality, it features the dinguza fabric pattern, which originates from the Wolayta people in southwestern Ethiopia. This fabric is renowned for its distinctive red, yellow, and black design.
The vibrant pattern holds deep cultural significance and is traditionally woven by male artisans, while women typically engage in cotton spinning. The intricate designs and vivid colors of the Dinguza fabric showcase the community’s rich heritage and play a vital role in preserving their traditional artistry. #PeopleToPeople #Ethiopia #LandofOrigins @StateHouseUg@jessica_alupo@okelloryem@spadiaspora@UgandaMFA
