It takes an almost impossible level of audacity and resilience to build anything in South Africa, whether it’s a startup, a small business, or a social enterprise. Don’t stop. This country needs what you’re building.
South Africa must document its history properly, or we risk people even denying apartheid ever happened. We need more documentaries and demographic data—without them, we leave the narrative to those with influence to shape the country as they see fit.
.@KamalaHarris: “Don’t let the people who don’t wish you well get in your head. Receive criticism, receive constructive criticism, but don’t let things that are not productive get in your head and keep you up at night because then they are winning.”
As we look forward to 2026, you really need to start understanding the importance of remaining silent. Not everything needs your input or opinion. Not everyone deserves a reaction from you. Some situations are meant to bring you out of character. Know when to speak up, but most importantly, know when to remain silent.
I think one of the biggest lessons I learned this year is that peace is something you build. It doesn’t just show up. You create it by letting go, setting boundaries, and refusing to carry what isn’t yours.
We don’t talk enough about the time, capital and support it actually takes to build something real. Imagine how many South African startups could thrive if they had the runway to figure things out, fail forward and eventually win.
My dad was advising a man that was complaining about his wife not giving birth to a boy because the man said how will his name "survive"
And my dad said something that made me go crazy with my goals
he said,
If you want your name to live and not die, make a name for yourself. your kids cannot keep your name alive.
If you want your name to survive, give your name life by doing things that people will talk about when you die.
he asked the guy "who remembers the kids of Abraham Lincoln or the kids of Thomas Edison or even Nnamdi Azikiwe?"
"Who even cares about the kids of anyone great in history?" we don't.
So if you want your name to not die, make a name for yourself by being a great person or else, your name will die when you die and there is nothing you can do about it.
Every lineage comes to an end.
But the great names in every dead lineage do not die. They outlive generations.
Every decision you make teaches people how to treat you. If you reward hesitation, they’ll delay. If you tolerate disrespect, it multiplies. Boundaries don’t need speeches; they need consistency. Over time, the pattern of your reactions becomes your reputation.
Underrated life advice: Be your own proof of possibility. Most people outsource belief. They wait for someone else to validate them. Start by validating yourself. Act like the person you want to become until the evidence catches up and you have no choice but to believe.
