FF Plus slams ANC for hijacking South Africa’s Venezuela policy

The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has sharply criticised the African National Congress (ANC), accusing the party of “hijacking” South Africa’s foreign policy stance on Venezuela and misrepresenting the views of the nation.

FF Plus leader Dr Corné Mulder said the ANC’s strong condemnation of the United States’ military action in Venezuela including the capture of President Nicolás Maduro reflects an “ideologically driven anti‑Western policy” that does not speak for all South Africans.

Mulder argued that ANC’s denunciation of the U.S. operation, framed as an imperialist violation of international law, was a unilateral ANC position rather than a consensus view for the Government of National Unity.

“We welcome the actions of the United States taken against Nicolás Maduro to ensure he will stand trial for the acts he is accused of,” Mulder said, describing Maduro’s government as “fundamentally illegitimate and corrupt” and responsible for widespread human rights abuses.

The ANC, by contrast, has blasted the U.S. military operation as a “serious violation of international law” and an act of imperialist aggression. Party leaders including President Cyril Ramaphosa have called for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife, and urged the United Nations to uphold the principles of state sovereignty and peaceful relations.

The dispute has exposed deep rifts within South Africa’s GNU coalition, with the FF Plus insisting that foreign policy should reflect a broader range of South African perspectives, not just the ANC’s ideological positions.

As global tensions over Venezuela escalate, the debate in South African political circles underscores wider questions about the direction of the country’s international relations and the role of party politics in shaping diplomatic responses.
