Mark Cuban explains how he pulled off one of Wall Street’s greatest trades
“When Yahoo offered us $5.7B in stock, I couldn’t sell it for six months”
“So what I did was I took every penny that I had and shorted the internet index as protection, basically taking insurance out in case the internet bubble popped”
“When I was allowed to sell it, because I couldn’t sell it all at once, it would just crater the market, so I did something called a hedge”
“What the hedge is, you can sell options. So I sold call options, which gave somebody else the right to buy my shares at a higher price in the future”
“I took that money and used it to buy puts, which protected me in case the price of my stock went down”
“When it popped, I actually made more money. It was called one of the top 10 trades in Wall Street history”

I just applied to @ABCSharkTank.
3 days ago I was pulling wire in Kentucky.
Then @mcuban reposted my work, DM'd me, and personally introduced me to Shark Tank casting.
Today I submitted my application for Season 18.
Here's the wild part:
I'm not a tech founder. I'm a Master Electrician. IBEW Local 369. Zero coding background.
I built @EV_ChargeRight — a $12.99 tool that saves homeowners $3,000-$5,000 on unnecessary electrical panel upgrades before EV charger installs.
70% of EV owners don't need the upgrade they're being sold. The math proves it. NEC 220.82.
I built the entire product with @AnthropicAI's Claude. No dev team. No funding. Just a tradesman with a problem worth solving.

A week ago I was just an electrician with an idea and a laptop.
Now I'm applying to pitch in the Tank.
If you're in the trades and thinking about building something — do it. The barrier isn't technical skill.
It's believing you're allowed to try.
I just found out about the HELOC hack to pay off your mortgage in 5 years.
Why isn't everyone talking about this?!!
$2,528 per month.
$303,000 paid in 10 years.
$340,000 still owed.
That’s the math of a $400k mortgage at 6.5%.
Most homeowners never run the numbers.
They just follow the payment schedule.
But mortgages are structured so:
Early payments = mostly interest
Later payments = mostly principal
The bank collects interest first.
This is why reducing principal early changes everything.
Example:
Mortgage balance → $400k
HELOC available → $150k
Send $150k to principal.
Mortgage instantly becomes $250k.
Your payment stays the same.
But now the interest calculation is dramatically lower.
Same payment.
Completely different math.

Two of the greatest investors taught me how to buy businesses:
Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett
I studied how they built Berkshire Hathaway and reversed engineered their process.
Here's the 12-step playbook I created using their principles to buy profitable, cash-flowing businesses:
1. Choose Within Your Circle + Boring Cash Flow
If you can't explain how it makes money in one paragraph, pass.
Buffett calls this your "Circle of competence" (aka stick to what you understand).
Also, I look for businesses so boring they make watching paint dry look exciting.
Think car washes, home services, laundromats etc.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand their business model.
2. Map Seller Incentives
Munger always said "incentives rule everything."
Before I make any offer, I rank what the seller actually cares about:
- Legacy and reputation
- Employee security
- Speed of close
- Tax implications
- Simplicity
Then design your offer around that.
3. Set Walk-Away Rules
Before you fall in love with a deal, define your deal-killers:
- Non-negotiables
- Maximum leverage ratios
- Minimum margin of safety
Having rules prevents emotional decisions when you're deep in negotiations.
4. Quick Value Check
Always estimate the owner’s earnings and rough intrinsic value BEFORE seeing their number.
Don't let the seller's asking price anchor your thinking.
Lock in YOUR valuation before any negotiations begin.
5. Asymmetric Offer Stack
Prepare 2 clean options:
A: Lower price, heavy cash at close
B: Higher price, more seller financing/earn-out
Let them choose their poison. Either way, you win.
The seller gets to feel like they're in control. You get favorable terms.
6. Trust-First Outreach
Buffett closes deals on handshakes because of his reputation.
You don't have that luxury... yet.
When talking with sellers, lead with continuity and certainty.
Let them know you’ll protect their people, close on time, and you stick to your word.
7. Efficiency Diagnostic Test
I love to pull 3 years of P&Ls, customer concentration data, and unit economics.
I'm hunting for quick wins via:
- Price increases
- Cost reductions
- Add-on service potential
You need to know exactly where you can add value or efficiencies before you buy the biz.
8. Check For Downside Risk
Charlie always said to invert and think about the worst possible scenario.
Literally plan a doomsday situation:
- Your biggest whale client leaves
- Somebody sues you
- The most important employee leaves
If you can survive each of these nightmares, you probably have a good deal on your hands.
9. Simple Language, Fast Decisions
Buffett executes deals on single-page contracts because only two questions mattered to him:
1. Will I make money?
2. Do I want to work with these people?
Don’t prolong the deal with complicated paperwork.
Keep your LOI simple and trim your timeline to weeks, not months.
10. Margin of Safety Check
Before I sign anything, I re-test the value with pessimistic assumptions.
If your margin of safety compresses below 20%, adjust the terms or walk away.
In the words of Buffett, you don’t want to drive a 9,800-pound truck over a 10,000-pound bridge.
11. Bias Check & Inversion
Charlie taught me to force myself to find one disconfirming fact.
Ask yourself "How would this blow up in 18 months?"
Check for confirmation bias, sunk cost fallacy, FOMO, social proof.
Then patch that risk into the contract terms or pass on the deal entirely.
12. Clean Close + 100-Day Plan
Once the deal closes, you want to honor the seller's legacy while implementing the quick wins you mapped out before.
Because ultimately, the goal isn't just to buy a business…you want to scale the business too.
This is the combined genius of Charlie Munger's mental models + Warren Buffett's execution + what I've learned from 15 years of business buying & selling.
I call it the "CBM 12" framework.
Use this sequence and you can buy any business in the world.
Even if you're starting with zero experience.
