These are some photos from Hosay celebrations in Trinidad during the 1930s. They showcase the richness of local culture and the way in which the festival transcended race and religion to become a massive ritual. The unity on display was considered a threat by European colonists.

For those who don't know him, Roy Lewis aka Lutalo Masimba better known as Brother Resistance is one of our cultural icons known for pioneering the Rapso music movement in the 1970's. Rapso is a hybrid of rap and soca.
