The Aspen Acres Fire has grown to 66,896 acres with 0% containment, prompting new mandatory evacuations overnight. The fire now ranks among the 10 largest wildfires in Colorado's history.
Our four firefighters assigned to West Metro Brush Engine 9 have been reassigned from the Snyder Fire to the #AspenAcresFire near Rye, Colorado.
The fire, burning in Custer and Pueblo Counties, has grown to nearly 48,000 acres and destroyed more than 180 structures. It is now the largest wildfire in Colorado and the #1 priority fire in the nation.
Conditions today are expected to make firefighting even more challenging. A Red Flag Warning is in effect, with southwest winds gusting 25 - 30 mph.
Fire managers are forecasting extreme fire behavior, including crown runs, group tree torching, and embers capable of spotting up to a mile ahead of the main fire.
