The Iyanhien Ceremony: Walking in the Footsteps of the Oba
A rare archival photograph of Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Erediauwa during the performance of the prestigious Iyanhien ceremony in 1979.
The Highest Rite in the Benin Kingdom
The Iyanhien ceremony stands as the highest confirmation and initiation rite in the Benin Kingdom. Spanning fourteen days, it is one of the most sacred, elaborate, and demanding ceremonies in Benin chieftaincy tradition. More than a ritual, it is a profound expression of kingship, sacred authority, and the responsibilities attached to the throne.
The Role of the Isekhure of Benin
The Iyanhien rites are performed by the Isekhure of Benin, the chief priest of the kingdom and custodian of the Iyanhien. At its climax, the Oba is adorned with a crown fashioned from clay, symbolizing humility, sacrifice, and the sacred burdens of kingship.
In one of these photographs, Chief Idubor Eguavoen Isekhure, the Isekhure of Benin, raises the Eben in salute to the Oba. Adorned with the Odigba (coral collar bead), like the Oba himself, he is distinguished as the chief priest presiding over the ceremony. Surrounding the monarch are members of the Ihogbe N’Ore, headed by the Isekhure, alongside chiefs who have themselves completed the Iyanhien rites.
The Highest Attainment for a Chief
Among Benin chiefs, the Iyanhien ceremony represents the highest confirmation and initiation rite a chief can perform. During the fourteen-day period, the chief symbolically mirrors the sacred duties, responsibilities, and burdens of the Oba, temporarily sharing in the discipline and obligations associated with kingship.
Upon completion of the ceremony, chiefs are accorded special privileges within palace protocol, including the rare honor of receiving kola nut twice during any palace function. The performance of the Iyanhien rites elevates a chief’s standing within the Benin chieftaincy hierarchy and remains one of the most prestigious and financially demanding cultural obligations in the kingdom.
Chiefs who are unable to perform the Iyanhien rite during their lifetime are accorded a symbolic form of the ceremony after their death.
Understanding the Weight of the Crown
In Benin tradition, the significance of Iyanhien is reflected in an enduring saying:
“If you think the throne is a place of comfort, sit upon it for fourteen days and discover the burden of kingship.”
The saying captures the essence of the ceremony. Iyanhien is not merely a celebration of rank or privilege, it is a test of endurance, discipline, leadership, sacrifice, and humility.
A Living Institution of Benin Tradition
For centuries, the Iyanhien ceremony has remained one of the most revered institutions of the Benin Kingdom. Reserved for the most distinguished chiefs and performed by the Oba himself, it continues to embody the sacred responsibilities of leadership and the enduring traditions of Benin kingship.
It is not merely a ceremony, it is an encounter with the burdens of the throne, reserved for those who dare to walk, even briefly, in the footsteps of the Oba.

Immunisation Tragedy: ‘I Just Want The Truth,’ Says Father Of Deceased Twins, Narrates What Transpired
The death of his newborn twins barely a day after receiving routine immunisation has sparked grief, outrage, and serious questions about patient safety at public health facilities in Lagos State.
Promise Samuel Alozie, a distraught father, is demanding answers after his nine-month-old twins died on Christmas Day, less than 24 hours after they were immunised at a primary health centre near their home. According to him, the babies developed unusual symptoms shortly after the injections and deteriorated rapidly before passing away on December 25.
In this emotional interview with Naija News Editor, Ogbolu George Oshogwe, Alozie recounts the events leading up to the tragedy, raises concerns over the conduct of the nurse who administered the injections, and voices fears that the ongoing police investigation and autopsy could be manipulated. He insists that he is not seeking compensation but the truth about what killed his children.
