“Do not give bribe to police personnel,” says Chennai city police commissioner A Amalraj to all the FL-2 and FL-3 bar owners in the city at an exclusive meeting with them at the police commissioner’s office in Egmore on Tuesday.

If anyone demands bribe, the cop instructed the bar owners to inform him immediately.

Police personnel were asked to leave the meeting hall when the meeting was started.

TAMIL NADU SANCTIONS ₹264.14 CRORE FOR STATE-WIDE ANTI-NARCOTICS TASK FORCE (ANTF)

The Tamil Nadu govt has sanctioned ₹264.14 crore to establish a State-wide Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) with dedicated police stations in every district and city police district, as well as a central headquarters, to strengthen the fight against narcotics trafficking and drug abuse.

The sanction was issued through govt Order of the Home, Prohibition and Excise Department on Aug 8, following the chief minister’s announcement that the ANTF would function under the chief minister’s direct control.

The govt approved the establishment of 65 ANTF police stations, comprising one unit in each of the state’s 37 districts and 28 units across nine city police commissionerates, including 12 units in Chennai and two each in Avadi, Tambaram, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruchy, Madurai and Tirunelveli.

Each unit will have one inspector, four sub-inspectors and 20 police personnel. In addition, a headquarters with 10 specialised divisions and 454 sanctioned posts will oversee intelligence gathering, cyber investigations, legal support, special operations, crime records, field intelligence, training, administration, information technology and a round-the-clock control room.

The govt sanctioned ₹245.99 crore towards recurring expenditure and ₹18.15 crore towards non-recurring expenditure. The allocation includes the purchase of 67 four-wheelers and 325 two-wheelers, along with the appointment of two cyber experts on contract at ₹1 lakh per month each and one legal adviser at ₹50,000 per month.

The ANTF headquarters will be headed by an additional director general of police and supported by an inspector general of police, two superintendents of police and other officers. The specialised headquarters will monitor all ANTF police stations, conduct cyber surveillance, investigate interstate and international drug trafficking networks, track financial transactions, analyse digital evidence and coordinate intelligence with national agencies.

The task force has been mandated to register and investigate narcotics cases, dismantle organised drug syndicates, freeze properties linked to drug trafficking, strengthen prosecutions, create public awareness and coordinate rehabilitation initiatives with govt departments. The govt said the integrated enforcement model would combine intelligence-led policing, technology-driven investigations and inter-departmental coordination to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s campaign against narcotics.

CHENNAI POLICE ARREST 205 SUSPECTS IN STATEWIDE CRACKDOWN ON CYBERCRIME MULE ACCOUNTS

Chennai City Police arrested 205 suspected cyber criminals from districts across Tamil Nadu during a two-day statewide special drive targeting bank accounts used to launder money obtained through online frauds. The operation, conducted on August 6 and 7, focused on identifying and dismantling networks that operated "mule" bank accounts for cybercrime syndicates.

Police said the operation was launched based on intelligence gathered from complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Platform (NCRP). During the investigation, officers examined bank accounts linked to cyber fraud cases and identified 310 mule bank accounts maintained in banks within Chennai city that had been used for illegal financial transactions.

The suspects were traced to Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Erode, Kallakurichi, Karur, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Nilgiris, Perambalur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Ranipet, Salem, Thanjavur, Theni, Tirupattur, Tiruvallur, Tiruvarur, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirappalli, Virudhunagar and Chennai. All 205 suspects were taken into custody and are being questioned by the Chennai City Police as part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators said mule bank accounts are commonly used by cybercrime gangs to receive and transfer money obtained through online investment frauds, digital arrest scams and other forms of cyber fraud, making it difficult to trace the flow of stolen funds.

Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj appealed to the public not to allow others to use bank accounts opened in their names to deposit or withdraw money. He also warned people against accepting commissions in return for allowing their bank accounts to be used for financial transactions, stating that such activities could result in criminal prosecution.

MAN ARRESTED UNDER THE POCSO ACT IN KODAMBAKKAM

Vadapalani All Women Police arrested a man on Thursday for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl at a house in Kodambakkam where the child’s mother worked as a domestic help.

A case was registered against the accused, Periyan, on Thursday under Sections 7 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The girl’s parents had separated six months ago. The mother began working as a domestic help at the accused’s house and occasionally took her children along to her workplace.

The girl disclosed the abuse to her father on July 30. The father lodged a complaint at Vadapalani All Women Police Station. Inspector Prabhavathi and Sub-Inspector Renuka visited the scene in Kodambakkam and registered the FIR. The incident was recorded as having taken place on May 30.

Police took Periyan into custody for questioning. Further legal proceedings are being initiated under the POCSO Act, and he was produced before a magistrate’s court and remanded in judicial custody.
