Mbeki was never on the side of poor black people. His vision, in my view, was to make white-owned corporations even wealthier. Through NEPAD, he created an environment that enabled South African companies such as DStv, MTN, Shoprite, and the major banks to expand across Africa and dominate many markets. While the promise was African economic integration, the biggest winners were large corporations rather than ordinary Africans.
At the time, Julius Malema argued that it wasn't necessary for Major General Feroz Khan to appear before Parliament's ad hoc committee.
The committee ultimately decided not to call him.
Now, after developments at the Madlanga Commission, that decision is back under the spotlight.
