टी. एन. शेषन देश के मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त थे। एक बार वे अपनी पत्नी और सुरक्षा दल के साथ उत्तर प्रदेश के दौरे पर जा रहे थे। रास्ते में उनकी पत्नी की नज़र एक पेड़ पर लटक रहे सुंदर बया के घोंसले पर पड़ी।

घोंसला इतना आकर्षक था कि उन्होंने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा,
“यह घोंसला मुझे ला दीजिए, घर सजाने के काम आएगा।”

शेषन साहब ने तुरंत अपने एक सुरक्षाकर्मी को घोंसला उतार लाने का निर्देश दिया।

सुरक्षाकर्मी ने पास ही भेड़-बकरियाँ चरा रहे एक किशोर को बुलाया और कहा,
“बेटा, यह घोंसला उतार दो। दस-बीस रुपये मिल जाएंगे।”

लेकिन लड़के ने बिना एक पल सोचे साफ़ इनकार कर दिया।

सुरक्षाकर्मी ने पैसे बढ़ाने की बात भी कही, पर वह टस से मस नहीं हुआ। आखिरकार उसने लौटकर सारी बात शेषन साहब को बता दी।

यह सुनकर शेषन साहब स्वयं कार से उतरे और उस किशोर के पास पहुँचे। उन्होंने मुस्कुराकर कहा,
“अगर तुम यह घोंसला उतार लाओगे तो मैं तुम्हें दस नहीं, पूरे पचास रुपये दूँगा।”

लड़के ने फिर भी विनम्रता से मना कर दिया।

शेषन साहब ने हैरानी से पूछा,
“इतने पैसे भी नहीं चाहिए? आखिर क्यों?”

किशोर ने मासूमियत से घोंसले की ओर देखा और बोला,

“साहब, इस घोंसले में छोटे-छोटे बच्चे हैं। शाम को उनकी माँ उनके लिए दाना लेकर आएगी। अगर घोंसला ही नहीं मिलेगा, तो उसे कितना दुख होगा। चाहे आप जितने भी पैसे दे दें, मैं यह घोंसला नहीं उतारूँगा।”

उस अनपढ़ चरवाहे के इन सरल शब्दों ने देश के सबसे शक्तिशाली अधिकारियों में से एक टी. एन. शेषन को भीतर तक झकझोर दिया।

बाद में इस घटना का उल्लेख करते हुए शेषन साहब ने लिखा

“आज भी मुझे इस बात का अफसोस होता है कि एक उच्च शिक्षित आईएएस अधिकारी होने के बावजूद मेरे मन में वह संवेदना क्यों नहीं थी, जो उस अनपढ़ किशोर के मन में थी। उस दिन मेरी डिग्रियाँ, मेरा पद, मेरी प्रतिष्ठा और मेरा अहंकार—सब उस बच्चे की करुणा के सामने छोटे पड़ गए। उसने मुझे सिखाया कि बुद्धि, पद और धन तभी सार्थक हैं, जब उनके साथ संवेदनशीलता भी हो।
