For most of my career, Iāve carried one flaw that I thought was a strength: I always tried to make thingsĀ the best they could possibly be.
If I built something, I wanted it to haveĀ every feature.
If I designed something, I wanted it to beĀ beautiful and airtight.
If I launched something, I wanted it to beĀ 10x better than the competition.
But hereās what I didnāt realize:
Most people donāt wantĀ perfect. They donāt even want 10x.
They want something thatās justĀ 1% betterĀ than what they already use.
Why 1% Wins First
The truth about product-market fit (PMF) is simple:
ā¢You donāt win by overwhelming people with āeverything.ā
ā¢You win by making aĀ tiny improvementĀ in one painful area.
ā¢And once people adopt you for that 1% better, you earn the right to go further, to go crazier, to go 10x.
Hereās the key insight:
If you go too far beyond that 1% improvement, people canāt always digest it. Suddenly, theĀ market size shrinksĀ ā because now youāre re-explaining, re-educating, and fighting uphill battles to convince people that something entirely new deserves their trust.
On the other hand, if youĀ battle an existing company with clear PMF and make your product 1% better, buyers instantly understand the value. They can convert quickly without a long explanation. And itās not just buyers ā evenĀ ad engines and marketing platforms perform betterĀ when they can clearly map your product to an existing category. That makes finding, targeting, and converting customers dramatically easier.
