Golden Knights fall short in Stanley Cup Final — but prove their window is still open
Now, a pivotal offseason awaits.

The Carolina Hurricanes are the 2026 Stanley Cup champions. They absolutely suffocated the Vegas Golden Knights over the final six periods of this championship series.
Before the Finals MVP trophy. Before the cigars. Before the celebration.
Jalen Brunson buried his face in his father’s shoulder and let himself feel it all.

Moment of appreciation for @JaredWeissNBA. As remarkable a “rookie” season on a new beat as I’ve ever seen after taking on the challenge to move to SA to cover one of the most important beats in sports right now. Just like with the Spurs, there’s so much to look forward to here.
“This is the biggest lesson of my life, the biggest learning moment,” Victor Wembanyama said. “I can’t tell you exactly what the lesson is, but we’re learning from that, for sure.”
The Spurs thought they could run inexperience, but it caught them, as it catches everyone. They blew the NBA Finals, losing double digit leads every night to the crunch time maestro Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks. Now Wemby must look himself in the mirror and see just how much harder winning the Finals is than making it.

And speaking of special connections to the city, how lucky @TheAthletic and its readers are to have the great @Ian_OConnor on hand to cover so much New York lore happening these days.
Another must read today.
And always read @FredKatz also! He has two great stories off last night, a special connection to the Knicks and the city, and a VERY WELL TIMED BOOK coming on all of this too!

My dad risked peeing on his rug so the Knicks could win a championship.

Always read @JLEdwardsIII. But ESPECIALLY today.
What a year the Knicks have had and James has been one of the best writers, reporters and just best overall human beings to capture it all.
The night Jalen Brunson — an NBA champion and Finals MVP — became the greatest Knick of all-time.

Before they could be Kings of the NBA, they had to conquer the comeback. Missions accomplished. The New York Knicks are champs for the first time since 1973, @TheAthleticNBA https://t.co/KdeLXz9zHJ
Jalen Brunson, the first building block for the Knicks' title, whose godfather runs the team and whose dad is an assistant coach, is your 2026 NBA Finals MVP, @TheAthleticNBA https://t.co/XA0V6HrYFn
For eight years, we talked about potential.
And about Friday, June 12, 2026, as the moment this USMNT would have to meet.
On a near-perfect night at SoFi, they met it, and maybe, just maybe, took U.S. men's soccer into a new era.
