The momentum of Queen of Tears is impressive. From the first broadcast's ratings in the 5% range, jumping to the high 8% range, to ranking first with nearly 2.5 times the difference from the second place in the TV-OTT integrated buzz figures in the first week of March survey.
At first glance, it might seem like a typical romantic comedy centered around a wealthy family, but the more you look into it, the more you can see the experienced intentions of writer Park Jieun. She has set up the framework of a typical Korean rom-com but has completely flipped the gender-related roles within it.
Hong Haein, who runs Queens Department Store, is beautiful. She comes from a leading business family that discusses profits in the trillions of won. However, her personality is disastrous. She has little empathy and no interest in others except for her own desires. This character has been a typical setup for many male leads in wealthy family characters.
If there's an arrogant chaebol character, there's a counterpart with the sentiment of an ordinary citizen. All the characteristics of this 'Candy' or 'Cinderella' character are embodied in the character Baek Hyunwoo. His family runs a small supermarket in the rural village of Yongduri, and his sister and brother manage a beauty salon and a boxing gym.
Although Baek Hyunwoo graduated from Seoul National University's law school, he came from a modest family and almost felt like he married into the wealthy family. The 'twist' inside the Queens family is even more vivid. In the first episode, the sons-in-law are all mobilized to prepare food for the founder's spouse's ancestral rites, and they complain about things that daughters-in-law would typically do during the holidays.
The drama also flips the usual rules of romance. Typically, a general romance involves a man and a woman from different circumstances meeting, feeling awkward because of their differences, finding common ground, falling in love, and resolving conflicts. However, the drama skips all this and starts in the third year of marriage. Moreover, the love is already broken. Baek Hyunwoo, for various reasons, is fed up with his tiresome in-laws and wife and decides to divorce, and he struggles to control his expression after hearing the terminal news about his wife Hong Haein.
