Out here on the road, I’ve learned something: I don’t have to prove myself right to make you wrong.
That doesn’t mean I lie down, let somebody use me as a doormat, and die either. I can stand up for myself. I can speak my truth. I can establish boundaries without deliberately harming another person in the process.
And I believe the same thing about what I write: If the shoe fits, wear it. Goddamn it-and wear it well.
Here’s where “winning” gets interesting.
When your only goal is to win an argument, somebody else has to lose. And when that somebody is your partner, friend, family member, or someone you supposedly care about, what exactly did you win?
If one person continually has to lose, eventually the relationship loses too. Strong relationships aren’t built by keeping score. They’re built when two people can put their egos aside long enough to ask:
How do we solve this together?
However when someone’s ego is so hell-bent on being right that losing feels like a threat to their very survival, the conversation stops being about resolution. It becomes about domination.
That’s when people start behaving badly. And dirty behavior doesn’t magically become clean because somebody refuses to look at it. If a person won’t examine the core issue-won’t take responsibility, make amends, change the behavior, and do the work-then the dirt stays right where it is.
Because needing to “win” every disagreement does some serious damage: It turns partners into opponents. You start fighting each other instead of fighting for the relationship. It destroys emotional safety. People stop speaking honestly because they’re afraid everything they say will eventually be used against them.
It creates a scoreboard. Yesterday’s mistakes become ammunition for tomorrow’s argument. It blocks real solutions. Pride becomes more important than peace, understanding, or progress. I’ve learned that sometimes the strongest thing a man can say is:
“Maybe I was wrong.” Or: “I understand your point.”Or even:
“We don’t agree, and that’s okay.”
That isn’t losing. That’s maturity.
Because sometimes the greatest win isn’t proving somebody else wrong. It’s walking away from the argument with your integrity-and the relationship-still intact.
And if somebody insists on keeping score? Let them. I’m too busy living my life to keep staring at the scoreboard. Goddamn right. AND if the shoe fits or the boot, goddamnit wear it, and wear it well. Give them something to really talk about in this small town. Because there are no secrets. Only the ones you keep for yourself. So how secret are they really? They’re not.
This isn’t rocket science. For Pete Fucking Sakes. You cannot write this shit any better. It makes for a plethora of good content with skill sets to write about on Dillon‘s dirty road diaries. I don’t judge it. I’m actually grateful for the opportunity of so many things to write about each day.
We learned collectively. One seed. One man. One day at a time…🌵🎬🤠🎥🌵🎬🤠🎥🛸🌵🎬Subscribe:
