Received a call from a French-CBC reporter this week.

Reporter: “I’ve been told that we’re no longer allowed to speak with you, and La Presse is encouraging us to distance ourselves from you because of what you wrote about media subsidies. Is that true?”

Me: “Quite possibly. La Presse and Radio-Canada are like peas and carrots: when one cancels you, the other tends to follow. It’s unfortunate—especially since I wholeheartedly support public broadcasting.”

When you listen to the news—any news—pay close attention to the experts they invite and what they say; more and more are being canceled by the public broadcaster just because we actually say what we think.

A weaker loonie makes imported food more expensive, putting even more pressure on food affordability.

Here are a few key economic indicators affecting food affordability since Mark Carney took office:

1⃣Food inflation: 3.2% → 3.8% (highest in the G7)
2⃣Employment rate: 60.9% → 60.7%
3⃣Federal deficit: $35.3B → $72B (larger deficits can weigh on the currency)
4⃣Household saving rate: 5.3% → 3.5% (less financial breathing room for the middle class)

These trends matter because they directly affect Canadians' purchasing power at the grocery store.

This is what economic pain looks like. Canadians chose this path in April 2025.

This is a great example of how Canadians are misinformed about food prices (see link).

The media turns to a Liberal economist who no longer conducts research in the sector, has no access to grocery pricing data, and offers little more than speculation (and is always wrong). In this case, higher tomato prices are conveniently blamed on Trump-related trade issues, despite little evidence to support that claim.
