Gamers, in light of the recent Microsoft announcement, it seems a lot of people are confused about this whole ownership situation.
And it can be confusing because the lines can be blurred. Conveniently, that confusion benefits them.
So let's talk about it for a second.
When we fight for 'ownership,' we aren't fighting for the piece of plastic. We're fighting for the right to own the copy of the game we buy.
That copy can be physical or digital.
When you buy a game on disc, you should own that copy of the game.
That's literally basic ownership and common sense.
You can lend that copy to a friend. He inserts it into his console and shouldn't need to CONNECT ONLINE just to verify that he's allowed to play it.
That's also the point of preservation.
A boy 10 years from now should be able to find an old console and a copy of that game, insert the disc and play it without depending on some company's servers.
The game IS on the disc. Not a code in a box. Not an entitlement sitting on a server somewhere.
Digital can work in a similar direction too.
If you buy a DRM-free digital game, download the complete game onto your hardware and it remains playable offline without constantly asking somebody else's server for permission, that's much closer to actual ownership.
The problem was never simply DIGITAL BAD, DISC GOOD.
The problem is DEPENDENCY.
If the product you paid for requires their servers to authenticate your ownership, then ultimately your access still depends on them.
And why do companies keep pushing us toward online-dependent digital ownership?
Because it gives them more control.
More control over access, resale, licensing, monetization, and whether that copy still works ten or twenty years from now.
A game you truly own can leave their ecosystem.
A server-dependent entitlement can't.
That's why this matters.
This isn't a fight over plastic.
It's a fight over who controls the copy after you've paid for it.
I just have this feeling that Xbox’s solution will be cloud streaming, charge a monthly or yearly fee and that’s going to be their affordable option. Not a fan in particular but I don’t see any other options at the moment. Though I could see them charge for a streaming box as a one time fee essentially revitalize that cloud stick Phil was working on.
BBC: Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is "thinking about" affordability for its next-generation console, amid a "crisis" in computing prices.
"I know players love physical media, and I know there's a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice,"
@Crossy_C98 I think for me I wasn’t excited in the first place simply cause we already have golden on modern platforms so I didn’t see a reason for them to remake it and the more I see it the more it looks like a through the motions remake
Bloomberg reports Horizon Hunters Gathering is being rebooted after negative playtest feedback. New plan is to remove the live service component.
“Guerrilla Games, the Amsterdam-based PlayStation subsidiary behind the Horizon franchise, has been working to reboot the game since June, said the people, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the project’s future.
Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope.”

Ah yes using Jacob Navok as a reliable source, a man since leaving Square Enix hasn’t done anything worth of shit since other than doing some NFT company and spouts failed business plans on X like just 1 live service will succeed while Sony bleeds money from their live service slop. Yeah totally a reliable source.
STONKS-9800 will not be coming to PS5.
Sony @PlayStation unilaterally terminated my PlayStation developer and publisher agreement without giving me any reason.
My existing games are scheduled to be removed from the PlayStation Store after August 23.
ONE WEEK WARNING for the #PSBlackout!
August 23-30. No logins, no playing, no purchasing on PlayStation.
This 1 week is the minimum requirement. If you can, start early, go longer. Let Sony know how important physical media is. Don't accept all-digital without customer rights!
