Grande released Positions in October 2020 and intended it to be her last album. She did not announce that publicly at the time. She told Evan Ross Katz on his podcast in October 2025: I did not think I was going to make an album ever again when I left for London. Wicked filming began in December 2022 in the UK. By then she had already decided she was done.
In a New York Times feature earlier this month she went further. She said there was something broken about her relationship with pop music, and that a thing comes along with your dreams coming true that feels dangerous at times.
This is the part the appreciation posts do not have the context for. The era of Grande being shared right now, the high-ponytail era, the back-to-back-album era, the constant-touring era, is the era she has publicly described as the period that almost made her stop.
What I keep coming back to is the timing of Eternal Sunshine. The album dropped in March 2024, two months after Wicked wrapped filming. It is the work of someone who got far enough away from her own machinery to want to come back to it on different terms.
Petal is the next chapter of that. She is releasing it on her own label, BabyDoll Music, with executive-production credit she did not have on the earlier records. The contractions in her current single's lyrics, which break the careful pop-diction rules she used to follow, are the public sound of a person who came back to music having decided she would only do it her way.
The pop-dominant version was the one she was trying to escape. The version she is now is the one she chose.
