It breaks your heart in a silent way, watching old people abroad tend to their roses, read hardcovers on park benches, travel to places I can’t pronounce, complain about gluten. Because retirement. Meanwhile our elderly parents are learning how to restart life in a tent, Lining up for water and learning how to make flour out of pasta. Their houses, the ones they saved for all their life, are gone. and I know for sure It wasn’t a mansion. Just something to rest their tired bones in. And now, instead of rest, they start over; without knowing if there’s even time left to begin again. How do you rebuild at 70? How do you carry loss when your back already aches?
