They drop a teaser headline screaming that animal shelters are “inundated” because “Amerikaners” are dumping their pets ahead of the next plane-load to the US, and then hide the “details” behind tomorrow’s paywall. Classic hit-job playbook; accuse first, evidence never.

The reality on the ground is the opposite of their narrative.

South Africans who qualify under President Trump’s refugee prioritisation for victims of race-based persecution are not mass-abandoning their animals. Many have carefully rehomed pets with family, trusted friends, or long-term networks before departure. Others have spent serious money and jumped through the bureaucratic hell South Africa throws at pet exports to fly their animals over later. There are documented reunions already happening in the US; dogs and cats arriving after weeks or months apart, owners finally getting their pets back after fighting South African exit rules, quarantine costs, and logistics.

The official US Embassy guidance is crystal clear; the refugee program itself does not transport or fund pets. Refugees must arrange it independently, often waiting until after they have stable housing. That is exactly what responsible people are doing. They are not “dumping.” They are planning, paying, and protecting the animals that shared their lives under the very conditions that drove them to leave.

Sunday Times knows this. They just prefer the smear. Paint the people escaping farm attacks, racial policies, and targeted violence as heartless pet abandoners. It fits the script better than admitting White South Africans treat their animals like family while the government that failed them for decades lectures about morality.

Afrikaners and other racial minorities who made it out under this program left behind everything; homes, farms, security, extended family, because staying became untenable. The idea that the same people casually toss their dogs and cats at shelters en masse is an insult designed to dehumanize them further. Rehoming with family or friends, or bringing the pets over when possible, is what is actually happening.

This isn’t journalism. It’s another cheap shot at people who finally got a lifeline from President Trump’s administration after years of being told their persecution doesn’t count. The pets aren’t the story. The desperate need to leave is. And the Sunday Times would rather invent cruelty than confront that.
