This tweet connotes that there are certain places, other than Nigeria, where a registered trademark affords you protection in multiple countries. And this, my friend, is false.

I see people dunking on Tayo over this. Well, I want to tell you that if you have a Nigerian trademark, it’s only covered in Nigeria. If your brand is sold outside Nigeria, you are highly exposed to legal battles even though you have an NG trademark.

Despite being a member of WIPO, Nigeria isn't a party to the Madrid Protocol. That means a local filing only protects your brand within Nigeria, leaving you exposed to legal battles globally; a global brand can also sue you in Nigeria.

In essence, the fact that an application was filed through the Madrid System and registration was granted in China does not guarantee that registration will be granted in Chile.
