@ECU_Biology MS RECIPIENT with Dr. Trip Lamb | Studying evolutionary relationships between carnivorous pitcher plants and the flies brave enough to live in them
So excited that this is airing! These flies are really extraordinary, I'm so glad I got to contribute to something that will introduce them and their habitat to more people in a fun and creative way. Plus I had an amazing time with a wonderful cast and crew!
The Purple Pitcher Plant is a pollinator eater, but don't fear, it does have one pollinator friend it doesn’t eat..the Pitcher Plant Fly!
Make sure you tune in tonight at 6:30pm on @tvokids for an awesome adventure with @theKannArtist at @Algonquin_PP!

@tjalamont @Bertonemyia @spiderdayNight It almost certainly is! That looks like a female to me - they're a bit more difficult to type to species level from a photo but I'm confident that's a pitcher plant fly. Great photo too!
@tjalamont @Bertonemyia @spiderdayNight Ah! In that case, this wouldn't be 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘺𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢 or 𝘢𝘣𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘢, but possibly 𝘍. 𝘫𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘪 or 𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘺𝘪. Given that the host plant is outside of its native range, I think this is the more generalist 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘨𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘦
@Bertonemyia @tjalamont @spiderdayNight I absolutely agree! Without the abdomen it's a bit difficult to say if this is 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘨𝘢 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘦 or a species of 𝘍𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘺𝘪𝘢 (most likely 𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘢 or 𝘢𝘣𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘢 given the pitcher) but this is definitely a pitcher plant fly!
Super thankful to be awarded Best Student Poster for the ESA Disease Ecology Section!! Having a great time at the meeting with some awesome scientists! Come check out my poster on intraguild predation in dragonflies and parasite transmission 🪱 #mwmccoy_lab
Had a wonderful time defending my master's thesis yesterday and am so grateful for everyone who has helped me over the last two years! It ended on the ultimate highlight: my 2bRADseq #fly phylogeny rendered in icing by @TheGoodnight94 and @sci_Ellet
If you can resist stopping to snap photos of tiger #beetles while walking on sandy trails, you have better impulse control than I do. This is 𝘊𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 spp. 𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘢 - the Rugate Tiger Beetle - fierce yet fabulous!
Congrats to my PhD student Chris Cohen @Myelaphus on successfully defending his dissertation! Let me publicly thank Dr. Cohen for all he has taught me over the past six years. His passion, skill, and grit will guarantee he succeeds at all endeavors.
Ok science twitter- like a week ago someone posted a list of papers their lab had thought were great 2020 papers after collating the list at the first meeting of the semester. I do not have the link nor do I remember more details...can anyone help 😅
I'm honored to have been awarded the 1st Place President's Prize for my talk on pitcher plant flesh flies at #EntSoc2020! I'm glad to have been able to spread the word about the evolution and conservation of these incredible insects.
